Bayreuth: Commuter stronghold with over 30,000 commuters in and out!

A real commuter trend is becoming noticeable in the Bavarian city of Bayreuth. 29,467 employees who are subject to social security contributions currently live there, of which a remarkable 9,453, almost a third, commute to work in another district or city. At the same time, Bayreuth is also very popular as a place to work: a total of 50,495 employees subject to social security contributions work here, of which 30,481 commute to the city from other cities or districts. This means that 60.4 percent of the employees in Bayreuth are commuters, like that courier reported.

But what drives people to travel long distances? A look at the commuter statistics shows that a total of 34.585 million employees subject to social security contributions live in Germany, of which around 40 percent, i.e. 13.9 million, regularly commute to another district. So commuting is not an isolated phenomenon, but a widespread practice. The number of commuters has risen sharply, particularly in rural regions.

Commuter movements in Germany

For 2022, Germany had 20.3 million employees who commuted to work in another community. The number has therefore increased slightly compared to the previous year. The average commute distance is also increasing: from 16.9 kilometers in 2021 to 17.2 kilometers in 2022. For many, it is not unusual to travel more than 30 kilometers for work, like this Federal Agency for Construction and Regional Planning proven.

With 7.1 million commuters traveling more than 30 kilometers, there is a clear upward trend. This also includes a group of 3.9 million commuters who travel over 50 kilometers to their workplace. Employees in districts such as Ludwigslust-Parchim (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) and Altmarkkreis Salzwedel (Saxony-Anhalt) have the longest travel distances, where the average commuting distances are an impressive 27.4 and 27.3 kilometers.

Bayreuth's position as a commuter destination

The situation in Bayreuth reflects a general phenomenon: more and more people are deciding to commute to nearby cities for work. While large cities such as Munich and Frankfurt am Main are undisputedly the largest attractions for commuters from the surrounding area - Munich attracts around 444,000 employees every year - smaller urban areas such as Bayreuth are also establishing themselves as attractive places to work. While the number of commuters in Munich increased by over 100,000 in 2022, Bayreuth is also attracting more and more people with its charming ambience and wide range of jobs.

For commuters from Bayreuth and the surrounding area, this often means longer commutes, but also new opportunities - be it in the city itself or in the neighboring regions. The results and statistics about these commuter movements are diverse and can be viewed in detail Commuter Atlas from the employment agency can be viewed.
