Bayreuth district: Fairtrade title extended for a fair future!

On June 15, 2025, the Bayreuth district remains a true pioneer in fair trade. Again Wiesentbote reported, the district was again awarded the title of Fairtrade district for two more years. This award, which was presented for the first time in 2019 by Fairtrade Deutschland e.V., is a sign of the region's ongoing commitment to fair and equitable trade.

District Administrator Florian Wiedemann as well as members of the Fairtrade steering group and representatives of the Fairtrade towns of Goldkronach, Creußen and Pegnitz were present at the ceremonial handover. These cities are part of a growing movement to promote fair trade at the local level. Actors from different areas of society work together here to support fair working conditions and a fairer global economy. The Bayreuth District Office highlights that numerous projects have been launched, including fair breakfasts and the establishment of fair knitting cafés, to raise awareness of fair trade products in shops and restaurants.

A strong network

In the Bayreuth district, the Fairtrade steering group, led by Dr. Sandra Huber, the central contact point for coordinating these activities. Supported by the climate protection managers Sabine Rüskamp and Gesa Thomas, a network is being created that not only has a local impact, but also beyond borders. “We still have a lot of plans to further anchor fair trade,” emphasizes Huber, who is also presenting new projects to promote fair trade.

Ceremonial award

The awards event was not just a reason to celebrate. It was accompanied by celebratory music from the Pegnitz High School Big Band and the Okafo group. Dr. Walter Ulbrich from Eine Welt Netzwerk Bayern e.V. spoke about the importance of regional and global action and Fairtrade Honorary Ambassador Manfred Holz gave insights into the comprehensive Fairtrade campaign. The afternoon culminated in a market with regional and fair products and a buffet that delighted the senses and convinced the guests of the quality of fairly traded products.

In summary, the Bayreuth district shows that a shared commitment to fair trade is not only good for producers in the Global South, but also enriches the local community. With over 2,000 Fairtrade Towns worldwide, the district operates in an important network that is committed to a fairer and more sustainable global economy.
