Watzmann Hut again victim of vandalism – mountain rescue service sounds the alarm!

The emergency shelter at Watzmann-Hocheck in Upper Bavaria has again suffered from vandalism. The Ramsau mountain rescue service reports that the wall between the shelter and the cordoned off emergency storage room was violently broken through. This latest incident, discovered by a climber on Wednesday and immediately reported to the mountain rescue service, represents a sad culmination of a long series of property damage. The estimated repair cost is between 300 and 400 euros, but the real price is the continued loss of safety for mountaineers in the region. Antenna.de has documented this worrying situation in detail.

In recent years the hut has been the victim of similar attacks again and again. As early as June 2025, a door was broken open, which placed a heavy burden on the mountain rescue service's volunteer members in their work. They raise concerns about the long-term preservation of the hut, which in the past has served not only as a shelter but also as an important material depot for rescue operations. The hut has already saved lives, especially in adverse weather conditions, but these repeated attacks pose a lasting threat to its functionality.

Repair challenges

But the repair is difficult. During a first attempt to repair the damage, the mountain rescue service had to cancel the operation due to strong winds at altitude. A police helicopter unit was also unable to reach the hut on Saturday due to bad weather conditions. The mountain rescue service is now expecting support in clarifying the incident and is calling on witnesses to come forward. Salzburg24 reports on the calls for help and emphasizes the importance of the hut as a shelter.

The police are urgently looking for witnesses who can provide information about the perpetrators. Those interested can contact the Piding Border Police Inspectorate. The reports of vandalism in such security-relevant places are alarming and reflect poorly on the community that should actually treat nature and its associated facilities with respect. The repeated attacks make it clear that there is an urgent need for action to maintain such protective facilities before it is too late.
