Casi triumphs at the Veste Coburg Cup – heart-stopping finale!
The 7-a-side rugby student tournament for the Veste Coburg Cup took place for the fourth time on the TV 48 rugby pitch on July 13, 2025. This year, for the first time, victory went to a team from the Casimirianum (Casi) high school, which triumphed in an exciting final against class 8c from Ernestinum (Ernes) with 20:15. Although the match ended in a draw after regular time and two overtime periods, the decision was made in the “sudden death” period.
Around 80 students were divided into six teams and fought for the coveted wooden challenge cup. The participating teams consisted of the two teams from Casi as well as classes 8a, 8b, 8c and 8d from Ernes. The weather conditions were a bit chilly and caused a brief rain shower, but that didn't stop the students from giving their best.
A special occasion
The trophy was presented by Dominik Sauerteig, the mayor of Coburg, together with Ursula Kick-Bernklau, the principal of the Casimirianum high school. Maxime Pommepuy, youth leader of the TV 48 rugby department, and the captain of the Casi team, Levin Michler, were also part of the final photo that captured this special day. The celebration was then rounded off with a cake buffet sponsored by local supporters.
The rugby tournament marks the end of physical education lessons for the 8th grade of the Casimirianum and Ernestinum high schools in the current school year. Sports teachers and trainers had previously taught the basic rules and techniques of rugby in two phases, from the start of school to the autumn holidays and from Easter to the Pentecost holidays. In this context, the students also got to know “no-body-contact rugby,” which is particularly suitable for school sports Kübler Sport describes. This format promotes team spirit and motor skills and is adaptable to the needs of the students.
Looking into the future
The tournament will be held for the fifth time next year, and the organizers hope that other Coburg schools will take part. The enthusiasm for rugby as a dynamic and entertaining sport is constantly growing, and schools play a significant role in promoting young talent.
The success of the Casi is not only a pleasing result, but also a sign that rugby is very popular as a school sport. The positive experiences students have in this sport show that rugby is much more than just tough competition - it is an opportunity to learn team spirit, respect and fairness. How Franconian day reports, there was a warm feeling of community on this sporting day.
Overall, the 7-a-side rugby student tournament went exactly according to plan and left everyone involved, from students to teachers, excited about future competitions. With a good hand and the support of the local rugby community, the tournament can continue to thrive for years to come.
