Coburg's bird shooting: A festival full of tradition and cheer!
On June 24, 2025, the historic Forte Coburg will shine in new splendor, as the young shooters of the Schützengesellschaft Coburg 1354 e.V. will determine their king or queen as part of the special event - and in the traditional way with the crossbow. Senior marksman Stefan Stahl already has a lot to report: The artist Claudia has created a valuable work of art with a dedication to the President of the Bavarian Sports Shooting Association (BSSB), Christian Kühn. This honorary disc combines two historical events and shows how deeply rooted shooting is in the region.
This year, adults have the opportunity to fight for air rifle royalty. “Tradition and progress are in harmony here,” emphasizes Mohr, the second shooting master. Because it is a very special year: The Coburg Young Riflemen are celebrating 100 years since they were founded on June 26, 1925. In addition, the Bavarian Sports Shooting Association is looking back on 75 years, which is reason enough for a great celebration.
A festival of shooters
The traditional eagle shooting takes place every two years on the Bärenschanze. During the course of the event, special attention is also paid to the art of brewing: on July 1st, the festival beer can be sampled to ensure that the shooters' thirst is quenched.
At the beginning of August, the next highlight awaits the citizens: the folk festival crossbow shooting. Shooting will take place in Coburg from August 2nd to 9th, 2025. Not only adults are challenged here, young people can also demonstrate their skills with a hobby crossbow at a distance of 10 meters in the presence of their parents. However, the members of the shooting club are excluded from the competition for the people's king.
Prices and conditions of participation
The entry fee for the competition is just 3.50 euros, and the prizes are extremely tempting:

Important: The shot targets are not transferable and must be picked up by August 9th at 10:00 p.m. People who have quick feedback can hardly wait: The proclamation of the People's King and his knights will take place on Sunday, August 10, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. in the festival tent.
A long tradition
Shooting has a deep-rooted history in Germany. Shooting societies emerged in the Middle Ages as a response to the security needs of cities. The effective crossbow was not only used for defense, but also found its place in festive competitions (including target shooting and wooden eagles). In the 15th century, these societies flourished with numerous festivals that were not only about shooting but also socializing. This tradition has been preserved to this day and is continued with great passion in Coburg, as the lovely events show DHM reported.
