Major fire in Immenstadt: Fire brigade prevents anything worse from happening!
In Immenstadt im Allgäu there was a fire in a residential building on Sonthofener Straße on January 16, 2026 at around 7:30 p.m. As the Bavarian police report, residents noticed an acoustic smoke detector and recognized heavy smoke development in the building. Fortunately, two residents were able to escape in time, while the others were not in the house at the time of the outbreak. Luckily no one was injured in the incident.
The fire brigade was on the scene quickly and prevented the fire from spreading to the rest of the building through rapid action. In total, the fire departments from Immenstadt, Ratholz, Bühl, Stein, Zaumberg and Rauhenzell were deployed with 71 rescue workers. The material damage caused is estimated at around 10,000 euros. The investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway, although a technical defect is currently assumed.
Safety through smoke detectors
These events highlight the need to install smoke detectors in apartments and houses. According to the Immenstadt fire department, around 70% of annual fire deaths in Germany occur at night, often because people cannot smell smoke while sleeping. Technical defects in electrical devices are a common cause of fire and are particularly dangerous for households with highly flammable materials such as wood or plastic.
Smoke alarms can provide vital minutes in an emergency. The dangerous smoke spreads quickly in the first few minutes of a fire and is the main reason why most fire victims die from smoke inhalation rather than from fire. For optimal safety, experts recommend paying attention to the corresponding test marks when purchasing smoke detectors, which guarantee the minimum requirements and the European device standard.
Statistical developments
The Federal Statistical Office states that the number of fire deaths in Germany has been reduced by almost half in the last 30 years. In 1990 there were 787 fire victims, in 2020 this number fell to 388. According to current statistics, the number of fire deaths continues to fall, even though the number of fire brigade operations due to fires and explosions has been increasing again since 2014. This shows that despite increasing deployments, preventive measures such as smoke detectors are essential.
