Thousands traditionally celebrate Handlaber Women's Day - a celebration of joy!
A bright blue sky and temperatures befitting midsummer created an impressive backdrop in Handlab in the Deggendorf district on August 17, 2025. Despite the summer heat, thousands of visitors gathered on Assumption Day to celebrate local Women's Day traditions. At a celebratory service led by Pastor Godehardt Wallner and with the presence of Minister of State Christian Bernreiter, the deep-rooted tradition was honored, which goes back to the 16th century and is closely linked to the legend of Anna von Engelsberg.
Bernreiter placed the important commitment of the volunteers and the blessed bouquets of herbs at the center of his speech. The event has transformed from a modest pilgrimage custom into a lively folk festival and fair. Everywhere was a hive of activity as stalls lined with local vendors offered homewares, handmade products, clothing and delicious culinary treats. The clubs in particular, especially the Bergschützen, ensured that the guests were entertained with a wide range of offerings, including a barbecue stand, cheese and a large selection of cakes. Her youth group also set up a lottery stand and a new pizza stand.
Fascinating festivities for young and old
Despite the heat, many visitors looked for shady places and often got lost in the refreshing ice cream stands. “Ice cream as the main meal” seemed to be the motto of the day, while musical sounds floated across the grounds and even a musician enlivened the entrance to the event. An entertaining program was offered for the little visitors: a carousel, a bouncy castle and numerous toy stands provided variety and fun.
As is the case with a good party, you could feel the connection between history and the present everywhere. Women's Day in Handlab has not only established itself as a cultural highlight, but also offers a wonderful opportunity for the village community to come together, maintain traditions and honor the valuable volunteers who make such an event possible.
