Investment fraud warning: This is how residents lose thousands of euros!
The warnings from the police are becoming more and more urgent: In the last few days, the police headquarters in Lower Bavaria have warned of a new wave of fraud caused by fake investment platforms. As pfaffenhofen-today.de reports, three men lost massive amounts of money after investing on the controversial platforms. A man from the Kelheim district even had to write off around 190,000 euros, while his colleague from the Landshut district was cheated out of 240,000 euros. Another case comes from the Deggendorf district, where a person affected lost almost 70,000 euros.
The fraudsters are inventive and use modern communication technologies to reach their victims by phone or WhatsApp. They pose as alleged investment advisors. After initial contact, potential investors are suggested that they could become rich - a tempting prospect. But contact quickly breaks off as soon as the transfers are made to accounts in countries such as Great Britain, Spain and Switzerland. An approach that is sold to many as high-level business, but quickly turns out to be a failure.
The fraudster's scam
The fraudsters' strategies are as diverse as they are perfidious. Initially, small profits are paid out to victims in order to gain their trust and encourage them to make larger investments later. The funds do not flow into real trading activities, but are simply lost. There are therefore depressing reports circulating among consumer advice centers, which have recently recorded over 100 complaints about similar trading platforms. According to verbraucherzentrale.de, these platforms promise high profits with minimal risk, which attracts many people, although the risk of a total loss is immensely high.
Prominent advertising or supposedly positive testimonials from social networks and TV formats such as “The Lions’ Den” also give the impression of seriousness. But appearances are deceptive: the so-called advisors are often nothing more than windy interlocutors who influence gullible investors and get them to invest even more money.
How you can protect yourself
The police have put together some tips to act more safely in the current online investment landscape. This advice includes:
Scammers are becoming more sophisticated and it is up to each individual to protect themselves from such schemes. Repayments after money has been transferred are rarely possible, and the shock of the loss keeps many in its grip. It is therefore particularly important to stay mindful and informed so as not to become the next victim.
