On July 6, 2025, Geopark guide Andreas Seel invites you to an exciting geological car excursion through the impressive nature of the UNESCO Global Geopark Ries. Participants of all ages are welcome at this two-hour event, as the explanations are clear and understandable, so that even beginners get their money's worth.
The excursion starts at 10 a.m. at the parking lot at Schießwasen (Oettinger festival site) in Oettingen. Sturdy shoes are recommended for participation and the fee is 6 euros, while schoolchildren and students can take part for just 3 euros. A look into the history of the earth
Why this geopark? The UNESCO area in the Ries is famous for the traces left by an asteroid that hit 15 million years ago. The crater that was created back then still impressively shows how the Earth was shaped by cosmic events. The region offers a unique window into the history of the earth with diverse geotopes, such as the Aumühle quarry, where a variety of rocks can be loosened, and the Burschel geotope in Hainsfarth, known for its well-preserved reefs from the Ries crater lake.
