Autumn construction chaos: S-Bahn in Munich becomes a test of patience!

In autumn it's time to change for travelers in the Munich region - both literally and figuratively. From October 21, 2025, the S-Bahn network will be significantly affected by extensive construction work. A total of six lines are affected, which transport numerous passengers in the greater Munich area.

The construction work being carried out by Deutsche Bahn is extensive and will include both underground cable engineering and track work. The S1, S2, S3, S5, S7 and S8 in particular have to adapt to changes. Travelers can prepare for replacement services that will be set up during the affected periods.

A closer look at the affected lines

The construction work will last several weeks. For theS1 and S8The work will run from November 21st (6 p.m.) to November 24th (5 a.m.). This involves underground cable engineering and foundation work for the new electronic signal box in connection with the Erdinger ring connection. The replacement service begins from Neufahrn for the S1 and from Ismaning for the S8, with the S8 being replaced by buses from 9.30 p.m. on November 20th.

• S2: Vom 24. November (4 Uhr) bis 28. November (4 Uhr) gibt es Ersatzverkehr zwischen Erding und Markt Schwaben im 20-Minuten-Takt. Grund sind Schwellenerneuerungen.
• S3: Vom 10. November (20.30 Uhr) bis 14. November (21 Uhr) wird zwischen Deisenhofen und Holzkirchen im 20-Minuten-Takt nur Ersatzverkehr angeboten. Der Anlass sind Arbeiten zur Erneuerung einer Eisenbahnbrücke.
• S5: Vom 15. November (5 Uhr) bis 17. November (2 Uhr) gilt dient der Ersatzverkehr zwischen Aying und Kreuzstraße im Stundentakt, da Vorarbeiten für den Ersatz des Bahnübergangs in Großhelfendorf anstehen.
• S7: Vom 18. November (14 Uhr) bis 19. November (19 Uhr) wird zwischen Höllriegelskreuth und Wolfratshausen ein Ersatzverkehr im 20-Minuten-Takt eingerichtet, aufgrund von Gleisbauarbeiten.
• S8 zum Flughafen: Diesen Abschnitt betrifft ein Ersatzverkehr zwischen Ismaning und dem Flughafen vom 24. Oktober (21 Uhr) bis 27. Oktober (4 Uhr), ebenfalls wegen Kabeltiefbau- und Gründungsarbeiten.

Overall, passengers are better off avoiding the S-Bahn when traveling on weekends or during holidays, as additional construction sites and track closures are to be expected there. The disruptions are also noticeable from the end of October, especially on the main line: extensive track and cable engineering work is required here, which began on October 17th. The S6 and S2 lines in particular are affected by constant restrictions, and in some cases travelers even have to expect early final stops.

To make the change easier for passengers, the railway is planning information steles at the stops. Access to map apps is also possible via QR code. Employees on site are also available to provide information about replacement traffic. Current information can be found on the Munich S-Bahn website.
