Fatal swimming accident in Kranzberger Lake: pensioner dies tragically!
A tragic swimming accident on June 30, 2025 turned summer fun in the Kranzberg swimming lake into a terrible tragedy. A 76-year-old man from the Freising district suddenly sank while swimming. Bathers noticed the incident around 7:30 p.m. and immediately alerted the rescue services. But despite all the efforts of first responders and the fire department, it was not possible to revive the man. He died right on the bank. This was not the only tragic swimming accident in Bavaria this year; More than 20 people had to lose their lives in June like this Bavaria water rescue service reported.
Fatal swimming accidents are increasing
The shocking number of swimming accidents in Bavaria makes it clear that swimming is always associated with a certain degree of risk. Several tragic incidents have occurred in recent weeks, including the fatal accident involving a woman in Lake Langwieder near Munich, who later died in hospital despite resuscitation. In Burgau, too, a bather was able to successfully save an unconscious girl from an outdoor swimming pool. This clearly shows how important it is to act quickly in emergencies.
There were also further deaths in Bavaria: a 78-year-old man drowned after a swimming accident in Altötting, a 25-year-old drowned at Lake Constance and a 79-year-old died at Sylvensteinsee. These incidents make people sit up and take notice and the President of the Bavarian Red Cross urgently warns against carelessness when bathing. “People should pay attention to safety and follow a few simple rules,” she says.
Tips for safe swimming
The German Life Saving Society (DLRG) has clear recommendations that are particularly important for families with children. These include:
- Parallel zum Ufer schwimmen
- Niemals alleine schwimmen gehen
- Eine Boje mitführen
- Kinder stets im Auge behalten
Despite the many swimming options in Bavaria and the pleasant summer temperatures, there is also an alarming trend: in 2023, a total of 411 fatal accidents were recorded in water bodies in Germany. This represents an increase of 31 cases compared to the previous year. This is the third increase in a row and over 400 victims for the first time since 2019.
The DLRG emphasizes that this increase also has to do with climate change and the more frequent hot summer days. In order to increase security, the DLRG is calling for the expansion of guarded bathing resorts and, for example, has installed 29 new emergency call points at municipal bathing lakes in Munich so that help can be called quickly in an emergency.
We all wish we could jump into the water without a care in the world and enjoy the cool water. However, with all the fun, let's never lose sight of safety. The loss of life highlights the importance of swimming safely and responsibly.
