Experience the moving story: guided tour on the Jewish path in Forchheim!
On November 1, 2025, the city of Forchheim will remember the eventful Jewish past and cultivate interest in peaceful coexistence. On the occasion of the commemoration of the deportation of Gottlieb Braun on November 29, 1941 and the destruction of the Forchheim synagogue after Kristallnacht in 1938, the Palatinate Museum invites you to a special tour on the “Jewish Path” on November 15th. These tours are part of an important initiative aimed at raising awareness of Jewish life in the region.
The tour, which begins at 11:00 a.m., costs 6.00 euros per person and promises to offer participants exciting insights into the historical coexistence of Jewish and non-Jewish citizens. The meeting point for the tour, which lasts about an hour and a half, is the inner courtyard of the Kaiserpfalz, Kapellenstraße 16. Pre-registration is possible by email at kaiserpfalz@forchheim.de or by telephone at 09191 714-326.
The Jewish Path
The “Jewish Path”, inaugurated in 2024, leads through the city center of Forchheim and tells of the fate, everyday life and persecution that the Jewish population suffered from 1933 onwards. In this context, a new educational program from the Palatinate Museum complements the offering. This is aimed at students and includes 16 stations that address the fate of Jewish citizens, including historical figures such as Ludwig Bauer and the Braun merchant family. It aims to bring Jewish culture and history closer to young people and thus makes a valuable contribution to education and enlightenment.
The cost of participating in this special school program is 5.50 euros per person and can also be arranged through the Palatinate Museum. The tours last around 1.5 hours and are intended for students in grades 6 to 10.
A digital platform for Jewish history
In addition to local initiatives, there are also national efforts to increase awareness of Jewish life in Bavaria. In 2021, the House of Bavarian History launched an internet platform that brings together existing projects on Jewish cemeteries and monuments. This initiative makes it possible to pool information about former and existing Jewish communities and synagogues and make it available to the public. The aim is to keep historical knowledge alive.
The database that is part of this platform is constantly updated with new content and provides information not only about historical events, but also biographies of Jewish citizens. As a result, Jewish life in Bavaria becomes visible in many ways and receives a place in collective memory.
The “Jewish Path” and the Palatinate Museum’s additional educational offerings invite anyone interested to engage with the history of the Jewish population in Forchheim and to honor their legacy.
