Motorcycle rider seriously injured in overtaking accident – helicopter mission!
A dramatic motorcycle accident occurred on June 19, 2025 in Wiesenttal, Forchheim district. A 58-year-old man from Ebermannstadt lost control of his motorcycle during an overtaking maneuver and left the road in a right-hand bend. The fall was so severe that the driver had to be flown by helicopter to a nearby hospital after sustaining serious injuries. According to inFranken.de the property damage amounts to around 10,000 euros.
Unfortunately, as the accident statistics show, such accidents are not uncommon. The ÖAMTC reports that as of November 3, 2024, 78 motorcyclists have already had fatal accidents in Austria, which accounts for around 25 percent of all traffic fatalities. So compared to last year the proportion has increased, which is worrying given the increase in motorcycle traffic and inventory.
Causes and risks for motorcyclists
According to statistics, the most common reasons for fatal motorcycle accidents are primarily due to personal negligence. About 80 percent of these tragedies occur due to improper speed and failed overtaking maneuvers. The endangered 58-year-old from Ebermannstadt is just one example of the risks bikers are exposed to, especially if they have less experience. Younger drivers between the ages of 15 and 24 have an above-average risk of accidents, with the severity of injuries increasing with age.
An analysis of the ADAC accident database shows that over a third of motorcycle accidents in Germany are solo accidents, as was the case in the incident in Wiesenttal. Technical safety measures such as cornering ABS or traction control could potentially help reduce the number of accidents. In addition, 80 percent of collisions in rural areas involve cars, which is why defensive driving and observance of traffic rules are particularly important.
Need for more safety training
In view of the alarming figures, experts such as the ADAC and ÖAMTC recommend intensive training to improve driving safety. Motorcyclists should not only wear protective clothing, but also regularly take part in driving safety training. Such measures could help to significantly reduce the risk of accidents and make driving safer. It's high time for every biker to have a good hand for themselves and others on the road!
