Memories of the first school year: Freising employees look back

In the past few days, the streets of Cologne have once again been filled with happy laughter and voices trembling with excitement. For many children, the start of school is a very special moment that is associated with many memories and feelings. Mercury reports about the first days of school by several employees of the Freisinger Tagblatt, who share their formative experiences surrounding the start of school.

Each of the stories, from the oldest employee from 1963 to the youngest from 2015, shows how diverse and meaningful this day was for the students. This is how Ulrike Wilms remembers her first day of school in North Rhine-Westphalia, which took place after the Easter holidays. Back then, their journey to school was around 30 minutes, and the class size was very large at 40 children.

Memories of the first day of school

The memories are colorful and unique: Alexander Fischer describes how he came to school with a bulging school bag and the feeling that “the seriousness of life” was now beginning. Andreas Beschorner thinks of a little boy who tried to escape through a window, while Miriam Kohr was already looking forward to reading and arithmetic on the first day of school. She then found an old newspaper article from back then!

Pauline Zapp, on the other hand, had a skeptical look on her first day of school, but that quickly disappeared after she unpacked her school bag. Her school cone was a true work of art, in contrast to Daniela Seulen's memories, who remembers more of a test than the day itself. Wolfgang Schnetz also didn't feel like going to school anymore until after the first day of school, while Hana Jalil, who started school in 2015, proudly entered the classroom in a traditional Pakistani dress and with a Frozen school cone.
