Grief for Michael Eberwein: Bavarian folk music loses an idol

With great grief, the residents of Dellnhausen and the surrounding area say goodbye to Michael Eberwein, an unforgettable representative of Bavarian folk music. The 62-year-old left us on the night of Sunday after a long, serious illness. Eberwein leaves not only his wife Gerti and two sons Michael and Maximilian, but also a fan base that has always valued his musical passion and commitment in the region. Like tz.de he only died shortly after his 62. Birthday.

Michael Eberwein grew up in a musical family and began to play musicians as a trumpeter at the Dellnhauser musicians at the age of 16. In 1990 he took over the management of the ensemble, which his father founded in 1948. Under his leadership, the group developed into a national phenomenon. She recorded around 200 titles for Bayerische Rundfunk and produced 24 sound carriers. Eberwein was known for his own style, which combines the joy of playing and the tradition of folk music. This diversity led her to appearances in countries such as Austria, Italy, India and even the USA.

a musical heritage

The Dellnhaus musicians are not only known for their concerts. In 2004 Eberwein founded the Dellnhauser Volksmusikfest, which attracts up to 25,000 visitors every year and now takes place every two years. The folk music festival, which was canceled for 2021, had developed into a real highlight among the events. As sueddeutsche.de noted in 2013 with one Repertoire of around 300 handwritten folk music pieces.

Eberwein's musical work has been recognized many times. He received numerous awards, including the Cultural Prize of the district of Freising and the renowned Cultural Prize Bavaria in 2019. The Bavarian Culture Prize distinguishes artists who contributed to the culture of the Free State, and thus underlines the importance of Eberwein's contribution to Bavarian folk music.

political commitment

But Eberwein was not only musically active. He was also involved in politics for the CSU and competed in 2002 as a candidate for mayor in Au. Although he lost to his competitor, from 2002 to 2008 he was a member of the market council of Au and acted actively into the municipal issues. Most recently, he worked for many years at the city of Freising, where he headed the citizens' office and acted as election manager.

his surprising death shocked many from the community that not only appreciated him as a musician, but also as a person. Eberwein leaves a large legacy of musical tradition and human connection. The Dellnhaus musicians will continue without their charismatic leaders, but it will be difficult to fill its place. In his family and the many people who knew him, Michael Eberwein will remain part of Bavarian folk music forever.
