Burglars are up to mischief: 14 cases in the old Wolfstein district!

In the last few weeks, the Altlandkreis Wolfstein region has been affected by a worrying series of burglaries that has also reached the Grafenauer Land. Over two weeks, from June 5th to 21st, unknown perpetrators committed a total of 14 break-ins, as the Freyung police station reports. The loot from these incidents amounts to a mid-five-digit amount, while the property damage is estimated in the high four-digit range, according to information from pnp.de and waidler.com.

The perpetrators mainly targeted cash and cigarettes, which is increasingly unsettling the population in the area. They were particularly bold when they broke into a butcher's shop in Spiegelau, where they entered through the main entrance door and were unable to make any loot despite significant property damage of around 4,000 euros. The series of night-time burglaries in the bar on Bahnhofstrasse were also unsuccessful, but the criminals also went on a rampage in other places, such as the elementary school and kindergarten in Hohenau, without finding anything there.

Burglaries in detail

The perpetrators' activity was not only limited to Spiegelau, but also led to break-ins in various locations. On the night of June 5th to 6th, there were several incidents in Mauth, where a drinks market, a café and a campsite were affected. The loot that night amounted to a three-figure amount of money and tobacco products. Further burglaries between June 13th and 16th affected Grainet, where a former company building, a clubhouse and a supermarket were targeted - here the loot was even lower, in the four-figure range.

The following weekend, two single-family homes in Fürsteneck were broken into, with the perpetrators stealing sums in the low five-figure range. Rumors suggest that these cases may not be directly related to the ongoing series of burglaries. The police are urgently asking citizens to report any suspicious observations, particularly in relation to unknown vehicles or people.

Safety recommendations

In times of such series of burglaries, caution is advised. The police recommend always locking doors, especially overnight, and not leaving large amounts of cash unsecured at home. You can never be too careful. In fact, current data shows that around 77,800 burglaries were registered in Germany in 2023 - an increase of 181% compared to the previous year. The majority of these burglaries occur during the day, which poses an increased risk to residents.

Experts recommend that you rely on effective protective measures, such as mechanical security on windows and doors as well as modern systems such as alarm systems and video surveillance. Alarm activation can help you react quickly to attempted break-ins, and almost every second break-in attempt fails because the perpetrators take too long to get into the house. It is therefore worth investing in security systems in the long term to protect yourself and your family.
