Luca Beckenbauer starts as assistant coach: A new chapter at FC Bayern!

A significant change to FC Bayern Munich's coaching team was announced today. Luca Beckenbauer, the grandson of football legend Franz Beckenbauer, will be assistant coach of the U12 from the 2025/26 season. This decision evokes numerous emotions, especially since Franz Beckenbauer, who died on January 7, 2024 at the age of 78 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease, was an icon of the club. However, his legacy lives on, and with Luca, FC Bayern has found a promising new addition to the youth department Mercury reported.

Luca himself is 24 years old and played through all of FC Bayern's youth teams before moving to Schalke in 2016. After a few stops, including the second team at Greuther Fürth, he ended his professional career due to Long Covid. Luca suffered from the long-term effects of this illness, which prevented him from remaining active in competitive sports. Sports picture highlights that his last competitive game for Wacker Burghausen took place on November 5th of the previous year, before he fell ill with Covid-19 shortly afterwards.

What is Long Covid actually? According to current studies, how they on PubMed published, many people who have Covid-19 suffer from a variety of symptoms even months after the acute phase. These include fatigue, headaches and difficulty breathing. These symptoms often last longer than four weeks and put an enormous strain on those affected, which Luca Beckenbauer also felt. His return to football will now take place in a different way: He plans to play football just for fun and would also like to use more time for his studies in real estate management.

What is particularly pleasing for Luca is that he can join MTV Munich together with his brother Elias. He has already made friends with many of the team's players and follows their games with interest. “I’m happy to be back on the pitch, even if I can no longer be in the same role as before,” said Beckenbauer about his new challenges.

Ultimately, Luca Beckenbauer's commitment just shows that the spirit of football and family is passed on across generations. While the loss of Franz Beckenbauer is difficult, the football community is looking forward to the future and the fresh perspectives that Luca brings to the coaching team.
