On July 5, 2025, the idyllic Eibsee in Garmisch-Partenkirchen became the scene of a tragic accident. A 33-year-old father and his six-year-old son have been missing since Saturday afternoon after both went underwater during a swimming incident. At around 11:15 a.m., the boy fell into the water from the pedal boat the family had rented. In a desperate attempt to save his son, the father jumped after him and also didn't show up again. The incident left the affected family, who come from Bavaria, in a severe state of shock. While the mother and four-year-old daughter, who were also on the boat, are being looked after, a large contingent of rescue workers is looking for the two missing people.
The situation at Eibsee is dramatic. Bild reports that numerous emergency services are on site, including divers, water rescue services, lifeboats and even helicopters who are searching the lake and its surroundings. However, so far no further information is known about the whereabouts of the father and his son. The police have started an investigation and are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
An alarming situation
The accident at Eibsee shows once again how dangerous waters can be, especially for children. N-TV describes the dangers that can occur when swimming. In 2022, 411 people drowned in Germany, including 14 children. The German Life Saving Society (DLRG) is committed to improving safety in the water and pointing out the dangers in and around the water. These dangers are often underestimated, especially in shallow waters such as garden ponds or paddling pools, where the smallest among us are at high risk.
The DLRG particularly recommends being particularly careful in and around the water, especially if there are children. “Water accidents happen quickly and often unnoticed,” said a DLRG spokesman. The organization's work is to provide awareness about dangers and protective measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
