New Kreuzwankl eight-seater chairlift: the future of the Garmisch ski area!
Something big is happening in the idyllic local mountain area of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The new Kreuzwankl eight-seater chairlift is being built here, a project with construction costs of a whopping 18 million euros. At the location where Germany's first six-seater chairlift previously operated, a lift is now being created that is not only more powerful, but is also intended to sustainably increase skiing enjoyment in the region. The old Kreuzwankl lift was put into operation in 1997 and has now had to give way to the progressive concept that promises better service for the numerous winter sports enthusiasts. The dismantling of the old lift, which recorded 27 million rides, was carried out quickly and was completed within just three weeks.
The technical manager of the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn, Karl Dirnhofer, was already impressed by the rapid progress of the new building. If you look at the construction site, you can see that all eight supports of the new lift are already in place and the concrete work at the mountain and valley stations is in its final stages. Tours to the construction site were quickly booked up, such is the interest in this new ski express.
Waiting was yesterday
The old waiting times of up to 20 minutes on busy days will soon be a thing of the past. With a maximum capacity of 3,000 people per hour, the new lift will not only be faster, but also more child-friendly. Particular attention is paid to the entrance, which was designed to be height-adjustable for beginner skiers and little skiers on the slopes. This makes boarding much easier for the youngest children. In addition, the circulation speed in the valley station is reduced to guarantee a pleasant entry.
The new lift takes passengers to the mountain station in just 3 minutes and 10 seconds, and the conveyor speed during the mountain journey is accelerated by 40 seconds. This is a clear advantage for many winter sports enthusiasts, who will certainly appreciate this time saving.
A look into the future
The new project shows the clear focus on efficiency and sustainability in the region. The old lift system will be returned to the Leitner company and has already attracted interest in possibly being put back into operation outside the EU in Argentina. This shows that the good old days of a proven lift are by no means lost, but may even be given a new chance on another continent.
The Kreuzwankl eight-seater chairlift is an excellent deal, especially for Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and especially for the Garmisch-Classic ski area, which would like to spice up winter sports tourism with innovations. On the website of skiresort.de Further information about the ski area and the new lifts can be found here. If everything goes according to plan, the new lift will be ready to start operating in the 2025/26 winter season and will noticeably enhance skiing in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The anticipation is already great and we can only hope that the winter season remains a spoilsport and that we can soon be able to ski the slopes with full joy.
