Partenkirchen honors Laura Dahlmeier: Memorial opened in the spa park!
On August 10, 2025, a temporary memorial for the late biathlete Laura Dahlmeier was installed in the picturesque Partenkirchner Kurpark. The memorial that was erected shows how strongly connected the people are here: the memory of the two-time Olympic champion was kept alive with a photo in an iron frame, a lovingly designed wildflower arrangement, candles and a large stone from the local mountains. The entire design took place in close coordination with Dahlmeier's family, which underlines the special significance of this memorial. Mayor Elisabeth Koch (CSU) emphasized that the implementation was decided quickly and carefully in collaboration with the relatives in order to give the valued athlete the honor she deserved merkur.de reported.
The Kurpark was chosen as the ideal location for the memorial because Dahlmeier was celebrated there for her outstanding sporting achievements. With the Partenkirchen Ski Club in the immediate vicinity, the legacy of Dahlmeier, who was made an honorary citizen in 2018, is kept alive in the region. Although the memorial is intended to be temporary, there are already plans for a permanent solution. In September, an application will be submitted to the local council to rename the spa park Laura Dahlmeier Park. Mayor Koch expects that the renaming will be accepted by the municipal committees without any major problems, as confirmed by antenne.de.
Mourning the loss of a sports legend
The mourning for Laura Dahlmeier, who died on Monday due to a tragic rockfall while mountaineering in the Karakoram Mountains in Pakistan, is deeply rooted in the population. Her sudden death shocked not only her family and friends, but also numerous fans and fellow athletes. During the preparations for the memorial, Mayor Koch emphasized that the family must be given the necessary time and space to come to terms with this loss. Dahlmeier's body is unlikely to be recovered because she had written instructions that she wanted to stay on the mountain if anything happened to her. Relatives are in constant communication with the authorities in Pakistan to monitor the current situation at Laila Peak, as br.de reports.
At the same time, the town hall of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is collecting contributions for a condolence book in which people can express their condolences. The community emphasizes that Dahlmeier was a “highly esteemed and lovable personality” whose death touched many. These condolence messages, which are collected by city hall employees, should be given to the family and show how firmly Laura Dahlmeier is anchored in people's hearts.
Laura Dahlmeier, who would soon have celebrated her 32nd birthday, was not only an outstanding athlete, but also a state-certified mountain and ski guide and an active member of the mountain rescue service. Her tragic loss will likely be a topic of conversation in the region and beyond for a long time. The memorial and the planned renaming of the park are unmistakable signs of respect and gratitude for everything she has achieved.
