Traffic chaos at the start of the holidays: holidaymakers now have to show strong nerves!

With the start of the holidays in Eastern Austria approaching on June 27, 2025, many families are ready to pack their bags and plan the first trips of the summer holidays. But what awaits us on the streets? Loud OEMTC Travel traffic is estimated to be relatively relaxed overall until mid-July. But that is changing quickly, because the longest traffic jams are expected from mid-July when other federal states start their summer holidays.

The north-south routes are particularly popular, especially the Brenner Autobahn (A13) and the Tauern Autobahn (A10), where traffic jams are likely to occur due to the high volume of traffic. By the way, the A10 will be accessible again on two lanes between Golling andwerfen from June 26th following tunnel work - good news for all travelers traveling on this important route.

Highlight: Major events attract people

Things get turbulent, especially at the weekend. The Formula 1 Grand Prix in Spielberg (June 27th to 29th) is expected to attract 300,000 visitors to Austria, which will bring additional traffic burdens. The Electric Love Festival (July 3rd to 5th) and the Tour of Austria (July 9th to 13th) also ensure lively mobility. In addition, travelers from Northern Europe can expect high traffic volumes because the summer holidays are also starting in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia ADAC.

With increased travel activity, construction sites and temporary restrictions are of course unavoidable. There is always construction going on on the motorways, and there will also be complete closures at weekends, for example on the A3 Nuremberg - Würzburg or the A8 towards Munich. An overview of the affected routes is available on the website Highway dashboards which displays the current traffic situation and construction site situations in real time.

Congestion-prone areas and border controls

Particularly congested areas will always be the toll booths, tunnels and border crossings. Delays are inevitable here, especially at crossings such as Walserberg (A1/A8) or Suben (A8/A3). The stricter border controls, which have been carried out more intensively since May, are contributing to the additional traffic density. Travelers should therefore allow enough time to reach their destination in a relaxed manner.

Heavy traffic jams are not only to be expected in Austria; Traffic will also increase in Italy, Scandinavia and Switzerland due to holidays. For example, the Brenner Motorway is often already affected by construction sites, and on the Reschen Pass there is two-way traffic due to construction work.

However, with a good hand and a little patience, you can achieve your goal without stress, even in these hectic times. It remains to be hoped that all travelers can start their summer holidays safely and full of anticipation.
