Tourism peak in Garmisch-Partenkirchen: over 1.4 million guests in 2025!

Tourism is making leaps and bounds in Garmisch-Partenkirchen! According to information from Mercury The region will record a positive balance in 2025: by the end of September, 1.4 million overnight stays had already been counted - 60,000 more than in the previous year, which corresponds to an increase of 4.3%.

The number of guests increased by 7.4%, while Bavarian tourism stagnated in other regions. The increase in international guests is particularly pleasing: 13.3% more visitors came from the United Kingdom, while the number of guests from the Netherlands rose by 21.7%. Arrivals of guests from the Arab Gulf states also increased by 19.7%, increasing from 7,900 to 9,500 guests.

Stability through the German market

Despite all the positive developments, the German market remains stable and accounts for the majority of guests at 77%. There was an increase of 6.5% in arrivals. In contrast, the number of US guests is stagnating, apparently due to the withdrawal of the armed forces from the region.

Events such as the inline hockey tournament, the BMW Motorcycle Days and the Zugspitz Ultra Trail have particularly contributed to increasing the number of overnight stays. In addition, the attractiveness of Garmisch-Partenkirchen will be further increased by the renovation of the conference rooms in the congress center and the completion of the tourist information center.

Growth and challenges in Bavarian tourism

Overall, Bavaria is a popular holiday region, with Upper Bavaria in particular at the top with 44.8 million overnight stays and 18.3 million arrivals in 2023. Compared to the 1.635 million overnight stays that Garmisch-Partenkirchen recorded in the previous year, the number of international guests throughout Bavaria has grown to 80.9 million, which corresponds to an increase of 18.9% compared to 2022. The share of foreign guests in the total overnight stays was 16.6% in 2022 and shows a continuous upward trend.

But there are also dark sides to tourism. In Bavaria, a downward trend is observed for guesthouses and inns, with a decline in overnight stays in these categories of 7.9% compared to the previous year. The focus has increasingly shifted to hotels and holiday apartments, where positive developments are being recorded. Overnight stays in spas and health resorts also show a certain stability.

The developments in Garmisch-Partenkirchen are a ray of hope in the current tourism situation in Bavaria. The region has managed to record continuous growth despite stagnating overall trends and remains a popular destination in the Alps.
