Rotary Club supports renovation of the St. Barbara Church in Oberschwappach!
A lot is happening in Oberschwappach in terms of community support. In August 2022, a remarkable wine tasting took place with cabaret artist Oti Schmelzer, organized by the Rotary Club Erlangen-Schloss. The focus was on an important project: the renovation of the Church of St. Barbara. This baroque architecture, built in the 18th century by master builder Joseph Greissing, is one of the town's listed treasures and urgently needs renovation work, which will cost a total of around 800,000 euros. Thanks to volunteer support, costs were reduced, which brought the entire community a little closer to their goal. According to mainpost.de, the first funds went into the renovation during the wine tasting, and the Rotary Club decided to donate a total of 2,000 euros.
The voluntary commitment in Oberschwappach is considerable. Members of the church administration and numerous volunteers have put countless hours into the renovation work. This included removing the pews, dismantling the organ and clearing out the sacristy. The community also got creative and offered cookies and self-knitted socks at the Christmas market to generate additional funds. All of this shows how much the people in Oberschwappach care about their church, as oberschwappach.info reports.
Important support and community spirit
The symbolic check presentation by a delegation from the Rotary Club was a great event. Lilo Meißner-Weißenberger and Michael Müller from the church administration accepted the check, while Oti Schmelzer expressed his joy at the support. “This funding is a real incentive for us to achieve our goal,” says the club’s president, Stefan Neuner. He emphasized that the Rotary Club volunteers for many charitable causes, including peace, fighting disease and education. In 2024, over 40,000 euros in donations have already been passed on.
This initiative aims to make the newly renovated St. Barbara Church not only a place of faith, but also a center of community for future generations. The ultimate goal is to celebrate Christmas mass in the renovated church, thereby creating a very special place for the faithful to gather.
