The Bavarian radio station Extra-Radio filed for bankruptcy yesterday. Broadcasting operations, which ran primarily via DAB+ and FM, were discontinued at the end of July. Since September, the station has only been active as a web radio, but that has also proven unsustainable. Information from Mercury show that the Hof District Court opened insolvency proceedings for “Extra Radio Rundfunkprogramm GmbH” on October 15th.

Insolvency administrator Andreas Schenk has made it clear that the station's liabilities exceed its assets, which led to the bankruptcy filing. A continuation of the station is ruled out and a creditors' meeting is planned for January. The economic problems are well known: the inefficiency of the frequency chain in particular contributed to this painful decision. About eight years ago, Extra-Radio had to switch to a new frequency, which turned out to be expensive and inconvenient. The monthly costs for the weak VHF frequency were around 10,000 euros.

The loss of diversity

As a result of the bankruptcy, seven permanent employees also had to leave their jobs in July. The Bavarian Journalists' Association has already expressed concerns about the loss of media diversity in the region. At a time when the media landscape is already under pressure, the closure of another station raises questions about the future of regional reporting.
