Drama on the A9: Car crashed through a concrete wall – a blessing in disguise!

On Sunday morning, October 27, 2025, there was a spectacular accident at around 7:45 a.m. on the A9 motorway near Ingolstadt in the direction of Munich. According to a report by the Mercury The driver of the four-person car exceeded the speed limit of 140 km/h. The car had a serious accident and crashed through a makeshift concrete barrier before landing on its roof. Fortunately, all four occupants were able to free themselves from the wreckage and only suffered minor injuries.

The fire department arrived quickly on the scene and was able to quickly extinguish the flames that broke out after the accident. The motorway was completely closed in the direction of Munich, while traffic in the direction of Nuremberg was directed past the accident site via the right lane. The accident site was later largely clear again, but there were temporary closures for cleaning work.

Background to the accident numbers

The accident is part of a worrying trend on Germany's roads. In 2024, 2,770 people died in traffic accidents, representing a slight decrease of 2 percent compared to the previous year, but still a challenge for road safety, such as that Federal Ministry of Transport reported. With its “Vision Zero”, the federal government is pursuing the goal of no longer accepting traffic fatalities and has already launched a comprehensive program for this purpose.

Safety at construction sites is a central issue here. There has been extensive construction work on the A9 since May 2024, which is expected to last until spring 2027. The construction site results from the need to renovate outdated motorway bridges. Some of these buildings date back to the 1930s! Project manager Andreas Hauser emphasizes that everything is on schedule. While the work continues, residents north of Ingolstadt are complaining about the increased volume of traffic caused by diversions, as many navigation systems guide travelers through small villages, which leads to noise and exhaust emissions.

Reactions and measures

The police and fire departments must cooperate particularly well in this area. The construction phase presents major challenges as no emergency lane can be created in the two-lane areas towards Munich. That's why two fire departments often respond to operations at the same time to ensure the fastest possible help.

The construction site is not only a logistical challenge for road users, but also requires adjustments in the deployment planning of the rescue services. It becomes clear that safety on the roads is a concern for society as a whole that involves everyone involved.
