Remembrance Day in Kaufbeuren: Remembering together on Remembrance Day 2025
The city of Kaufbeuren is preparing for Remembrance Day, which will be celebrated on Sunday, November 16, 2025. This important day of remembrance, dedicated to the victims of war and violence, has a long history. It was launched over 100 years ago by the German War Graves Commission and was initially abolished after the National Socialists came to power until it was reintroduced in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1950. Since 1952, Remembrance Day has been a national day of remembrance and is one of the “quiet holidays” in Germany, on which public entertainment events are prohibited. This means that a quiet and thoughtful weekend awaits, during which the population should pause to remember the fallen.
Several commemorations are planned in Kaufbeuren, which warmly invite citizens as well as authorities, corporations and associations. On Sunday at 11:15 a.m. there will be a joint memorial service at the memorial in the Old Town Cemetery, Friedensstraße 2. Mayor Stefan Bosse and Colonel Thorsten Milewski will take part in the ceremony and give the speeches, while the Kaufbeuren city band will provide the musical accompaniment.
Additional events
But on Saturday, November 15, 2025, the series of commemorative events starts with a service at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of St. Stephan, followed by a memorial service in the cemetery in the Kleinkemnat district. On Sunday we continue with further church services and commemorations in the Hirschzell and Oberbeuren districts. A service will be held at St. Thomas Church at 8:30 a.m. followed by a memorial service at the cemetery. At 10:00 a.m. there will be a service in the Church of St. Dionysius and a subsequent memorial service at the war memorial in Oberbeuren. These events provide the space and opportunity to reflect on the important meaning of remembrance.
The memories of the victims who died as a result of wars and acts of violence are of central importance to our society. Most of the time it is tragic individual fates that are hidden behind the numbers. That's why it's important to use these days for reflection and remembrance.
A look into the present
Whether in Kaufbeuren or elsewhere, the topics of commemoration and technology give rise to reflection and invite people to deal with both the past and the challenges of the present.
