Captain Tomáš Rubeš about the Blue Devils: We are ready for the season!”
The anticipation is palpable in the ice hockey world, especially among the Blue Devils Weiden team, which is starting the new season with Tomáš Rubeš. Rubeš, who has been on the ice for Weiden since the 2018/19 season, is celebrating his eighth season this year and feels at home in Weiden. He describes the city as his “second home” and emphasizes the importance of teamwork, in an interview with DEL2 becomes clear.
For the Blue Devils captain, the role of leader is an honor. His reserved leadership style, which is characterized by targeted communication, makes him valued in the locker room. “I only speak when it’s important,” says Rubeš, who is planning to have a younger team this season that will score points with a better skating style. The goals are ambitious: The Blue Devils want to reach the top six of the DEL2.
The challenges of last season
The 2021/22 season was marked by injuries for Rubeš, forcing him to only play 42 games. The Blue Devils missed his presence, especially in the crucial playoffs against Erfurt, which underlines the importance of his role. However, according to coach Sebastian Buchwieser, Rubeš was able to improve his defensive skills and showed himself to be the team's central playmaker. With a total of 227 scorer points from 151 games, he is one of the top performers, which consolidates his valuable position in the squad. He now remains the team's third forward to remain on the ice, following Chad Bassen and Neal Samanski from the previous season.
“Despite the challenges, I still see a lot of room for improvement in my performance,” emphasizes Rubeš, who is already looking forward to the start of the season. This will take place on September 19, 2025 against ESV Kaufbeuren, followed by an away game at the Ravensburg Towerstars on September 21, 2025. Before the first puck, the team still has plans: A new addition is expected shortly to further strengthen the team.
Ice hockey in the DEL2
The German Ice Hockey League 2, in which the Blue Devils Weiden fight, has been the second highest ice hockey league in Germany since the 2013/2014 season. The league has continued to develop and is now organized by the Eishockey Spielbetriebsgesellschaft (ESBG). The current game results and statistics can be found on platforms such as Ice hockey statistics, which also document the successes of the last few years.
With almost 14 teams in the DEL2, all of which are structured as corporations, the competition is palpable. Since its founding, the league has produced various champions, including the Fischtown Pinguins and the Bietigheim Steelers, who also had their place in the 2nd Ice Hockey Bundesliga. The DEL2 is currently facing its tenth season, in which the Blue Devils Weiden and Tomáš Rubeš are doing everything they can to compete in the top half of the table.
