Kaufbeuren celebrates: Dramatic derby victory in the penalty shootout!
On October 26, 2025, the spectators celebrated a thrilling derby in the sold-out Energie-Schwaben-Arena when ESV Kaufbeuren defeated EV Landshut 4:3 after a thrilling penalty shootout. Despite numerous failures, the team led by coach Todd Warriner was able to impress and get important points in the race for the table of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL).
On the ice, goalkeeper Daniel Fießinger stood out as one of the big heroes of the evening. He saved numerous throws from Landshut and was crucial in ensuring that the game did not get out of hand. His performance also allowed the hosts to score a decisive penalty at the very last moment and boosted the confidence of the entire team. After the game, Fießinger emphasized the importance of the victory for the team, the fans and the club. “It was important to maintain the euphoria,” he said, while player Philipp Krening, who scored the decisive penalty, described the game as “awesome”. Krening, a licensed player from Munich, pointed out that he often practices such moments in training.
Setbacks and comebacks
ESV Kaufbeuren had to do without several key players in the derby: Max Oswald, Florian Reinwald and Joe Cassetti were missing due to injury, while Henri Kanninen was ill. Nevertheless, Rio Kaiser and Nikolaus Heigl from the cooperation team of DEL club Red Bull Munich were there and contributed to the success.
The game didn't start well for ESVK when EV Landshut took the lead in the 11th minute through Jesse Koskenkorva. Although the ESVK had some good offensive actions in the first minute, they were unable to score any goals in the power play. The next setback followed in the second third: Landshut used a majority to take the lead 0-2 through David Elsner. But the ESVK didn’t give up. Philipp Krening reduced the score to 1:2 in the 33rd minute, followed by an own goal from Landshut that equalized the score to 2:2.
An exciting finale
In the final third, the ESVK showed an impressive reaction: Nikolaus Heigl gave the Kaufbeuren team a 3-2 lead in the 46th minute. But here too, EV Landshut showed its fighting spirit and equalized 3-3 through Julian Kornelli when they were outnumbered. The tension increased as the game went into overtime, in which the Kaufbeuren team started with one man more, but were initially unable to score another goal.
Finally it came to a penalty shootout, in which Fießinger fended off Landshut's first two attempts. Tyson McLellan and Philipp Krening then managed to put the disc in the net, thus securing the additional point for ESV Kaufbeuren. In doing so, the Kaufbeuren team once again underlined their competitive tradition, which goes back to the founding of the DEL in 1994, when the Kölner Haie were crowned as the first German champions. The DEL is considered the highest ice hockey league in Germany and ESV Kaufbeuren is a dynamic, constantly developing part of this exciting league.
The fans in the Energie-Schwaben-Arena can already look forward to the next home game, where ESV Kaufbeuren will once again have the opportunity to conquer the ice and collect the next points. The cheers in the arena after this heart-stopping finale give a foretaste of what this season has in store.
