E-scooter accident in Saal: 14-year-old injured in collision!

A 14-year-old e-scooter driver had to be taken to hospital after an accident in Saal an der Donau on December 5, 2025. The teenager was riding his electric scooter on Kirchstrasse and then turned onto the main street without paying attention to the stop sign there. He disregarded the right of way of a 51-year-old driver who was driving on the main road towards Abensberger Straße. It happened as it had to happen: a collision between the e-scooter and the car occurred and the boy fell.
Fortunately, he only sustained minor injuries and was treated on site by emergency services. This incident sheds light on the increasingly dangerous situation in road traffic for e-scooter users.

Statistics show an alarming increase in e-scooter accidents in recent years. Loud daily news The police registered almost 12,000 accidents with e-scooters in 2024, which means an increase of over 27% compared to 2023. The increase in deaths is also dramatic: 27 people died in e-scooter accidents, all of whom were on a scooter themselves. For comparison: in 2023 the statistics counted 22 deaths.
Around 1,500 people suffered serious injuries and around 11,400 suffered minor injuries in this context.

Dangerous trend in road safety

A targeted look at the causes of accidents reveals that serious errors in the use of roadways and sidewalks are the most common cause of accidents. Over 50% of the incidents occurred with other road users - in most cases they were collisions with cars. Also surprising are the numbers that show that drivers were at fault in many cases, leading to the tragic deaths of seven e-scooter riders. Almost half of the drivers involved in accidents were younger than 25 years old, while only around 3% of the drivers involved were 65 years old or older Bavarian Radio reported.

The popularity of e-scooters, especially among young people, has increased - in 2023 there were almost 30% more e-scooters on the roads than the year before. Private e-scooters even rose by 37%. This increasing number of users could contribute to the increase in accidents. It remains to be seen how road safety for e-scooter drivers can be improved in the coming years so that such incidents occur less frequently.
The findings about the shocking number of accidents and the demographic distribution of the drivers involved in accidents suggest that it is essential for both drivers and other road users to be aware of the risks and to be safer on the road.
