Five buddies conquer the Race24: triumph and perseverance!
In the 27th edition of the Race24 in Kelheim, five buddies impressively defied all adversities and demonstrated their team spirit. In a gripping competition, 118 men's teams competed against each other, and the “Zurich Insurance Bauer” team won 35. The participants, consisting of Martin Stockert, Florian Mayer, Stefan Pollinger, Claudius Bauer and Markus Franke, were challenged on the race track during the 24 hours.
Martin Stockert remembered his sleepless hours: "I slept between 3:41 a.m. and 4:03 a.m. During the race, the athletes were not only physically, but also mentally challenged. Florian Mayer, who went into the race as a starting driver, confessed that he felt nervous before his first round, but still managed the opening round in less than 24 minutes. Claudius Bauer spoke about the challenges that darkness brought with him. And if we are already with challenges: Markus Franke had to deal with technical problems on his rear brake and additional stomach problems. He attributed these problems to unusual diet, which is not atypical in a long race.
The stony path to the home stretch
The team strategy without getting by without double rounds was crucial and proved to be successful. The lap times usually remained less than half an hour, despite minor difficulties such as a chain problem by Stefan Pollinger, which, however, hardly lost time. At the end of the race, the team was able to cover 49 laps. After this intensely experienced challenge, Florian Mayer was relieved and described the experience as "like a dream" - a feeling that you can only share according to such a marathon. The other team members also think about a return to the next edition of the Race24.
An important aspect of such 24-hour races is also the nutrition that influences both physical and mental performance. The challenges are known: endurance athletes need a special diet that covers their high energy requirements. It is particularly important for long races to consume the right mix of carbohydrates, fats and protein in order to protect the physical reserves and increase performance. Recommended foods include rice pudding, pasta with pesto and cake to provide fast energy. Good hydration also plays an important role in avoiding performance collapse.
