Unforgettable experiences: senior trip to the Danube Gorge!

From June 24th to 26th, the seniors from Koblach had the opportunity to explore the picturesque Altmühltal. Their journey took them through the charming towns of Neuburg an der Donau and Kelheim, with the legendary Weltenburg Monastery as a highlight. But not everything went according to plan - the low water level of the Danube prevented the planned shipping through the Danube Gorge, which required some creative solutions.

However, the seniors were not discouraged. Instead of the boat trip, there was a relaxed boat trip in Kelheim, which took place in wonderful weather. The group then took the bus to Weltenburg Monastery. Some adventurous participants opted for the footpath, which made them sweat even more in temperatures around 33°C.

Unique natural scenery

The Danube Gorge, with its impressive rock formations and steep walls, is a real feast for the eyes. The approximately 5.5 kilometer long section between Kelheim and Weltenburg Monastery offers breathtaking views of the limestone massifs that were formed around 150 million years ago. This region is not only a popular excursion destination, but has also been placed under nature protection. There are numerous ways to discover the Danube Gorge, be it on foot, by bike or by boat - even if the latter was not possible this time, as vol.at reports.

Particularly noteworthy are the unique rocks such as “The Three Brothers” and “Petrified Virgin”, which characterize the landscape and amaze nature lovers. Last but not least, the area was converted into a National Natural Area in 2020, another sign of how much the beauty of this region is valued.

Weltenburg monastery steeped in history

Weltenburg Monastery, whose origins date back to 617, offers more than just a spiritual site. It is home to the oldest monastery brewery in the world and is known for its inviting beer garden. The monastery church, a masterpiece of the Bavarian late Baroque, was created by the Asam brothers and attracts art lovers from near and far. The combination of history and nature makes a visit here a unique experience, as donaudurchbruch-weltenburg.com emphasizes.

Whether “good food, fine drinks or sumptuous ice cream sundaes” – the travelers were not just about discovering, but also about enjoying. Entertaining evenings outdoors and the Lädala, a welcome addition for some seniors, rounded off the stay and created an exuberant atmosphere. Despite the unplanned changes, the trip was a complete success and showed that you can have a great time even with small obstacles.

The committed participants of the senior trip from Koblach once again demonstrated how you can make the best of every situation and create beautiful memories together. 🧡
