Kitzingen pedals: city cycling for a better climate!

A true cycling spirit is evident in the Kitzingen district this year! The nationwide “City Cycling” campaign started on June 17th and runs until July 17th. The aim of the campaign is to get as many people as possible to leave their cars behind and get in the saddle instead. So far, over 400 participants have registered, organized into more than 70 teams. A special focus this year is on Prichsenstadt, where around 60 cyclists are taking part in the competition. There is great anticipation because the campaign is not only intended to promote sustainable transport, but also to focus on the fun of cycling. The kilometers driven are easily recorded via the city cycling app, which makes participation even more straightforward. According to Radiogong this is also necessary because last year only individual communities took part and there are no comparative figures for the entire district.

A look beyond the district's borders shows that city cycling has already ended in Würzburg. Almost 4,000 participants took part in 244 teams and saved a total of 138 tons of CO2. This means that the competition not only has practical benefits, but also contributes to combating climate change.

Together for the climate

The “City Cycling” initiative has been around since 2008 and has a clear goal: to motivate citizens and local politicians to cycle more. The exchange between the population and decision-makers is also strengthened. Participating municipalities have a period of 21 days between May and September to collect their kilometers. At the end, it is determined which municipality has cycled the most kilometers and the best cities are awarded. Not only is the total number of kilometers cycled counted, but also the commitment that the communities show to each other.

A special highlight is the integrated reporting platform RADar!, which citizens can use to provide information about problematic infrastructure. This shows how important the campaign is, not only for climate protection, but also for improving cycle paths and infrastructure in cities. According to Klimabündnis, the cycling vote will also be used to test and implement specific improvements to the cycle path infrastructure, which are based on the experiences of the participants.

Registration and participation

If you are not yet part of the campaign and would like to register for city cycling, you can do so via the official website. The registration page is the first step in registering for your own municipality, but should only be done after the municipality has been activated. It may take some time until all municipalities are checked and activated, so interested cyclists are asked to be patient.

Overall, it shows that city cycling is not just a competition, but much more: it brings people together under the common goal of actively supporting climate protection and at the same time enjoying cycling. The Kitzingen district is particularly standing out this year, and it will be exciting to see how many kilometers the participants will collect in the coming weeks!
