Food thief in Himmelkron: Police discover drugs and whiskey!

In Himmelkron on Friday evening, June 13, 2025, a 22-year-old Belarusian was caught red-handed while shoplifting. At around 7:15 p.m., alert witnesses noticed the young man packing groceries into his backpack and leaving the store without paying. He was approached in the parking lot by employees who asked him into the office, as fränkischer tag reports. It turned out that the thief had not only stolen food worth 28.59 euros, but was also transporting additional stolen goods in his van with a Polish registration.

The police found several bottles of whiskey, expensive sweets and 19 new sunglasses in the perpetrator's vehicle. When asked, the man was unable to provide any proof of ownership of the seized goods, which had a total value of around 800 euros. In a further twist, the search revealed that he had cannabis products with him that he had purchased abroad. This is a violation of the new consumer cannabis law.

New regulations in cannabis legislation

Legislation regarding cannabis has changed significantly in Germany since 2025. The reform now allows personal consumption for adults under certain conditions and regulates cultivation for personal use. Cannabis clubs for communal cultivation and consumption have also been legalized. Despite the reform, the strict ban on advertising cannabis products remains and penalties for illegal trade have been increased.

Certain activities remain illegal, including importing cannabis from abroad, which carries heavy penalties. The young man from Himmelkron now has to face criminal liability because importation is punishable by high prison sentences according to the new § 29a BtMG. Violations of these regulations can be punished with up to 10 years in prison, depending on the amount of cannabis.

The development of the cannabis market in Germany

The discussion about cannabis in Germany is not new. Since 2017, doctors have been allowed to prescribe cannabis as part of their freedom of treatment, which has favored the market for medical cannabis. Despite slow market development, there are now attempts to legalize the consumption of cannabis in controlled conditions in order to combat the black market. This legislative development is based, among other things, on examples from countries such as Canada and the Netherlands.

Annual treatment costs for medical cannabis amount to billions, while the increasing consumption among young adults is noteworthy: According to Statista, almost one in three adults in Germany has already used cannabis at least once. The aim of legalizing personal consumption is to protect consumers without violating existing laws.

The events in Himmelkron show the traces that this legal change leaves behind. The young man will now face the consequences of his actions as society continues to debate the pros and cons of cannabis reform.
