The gate is not only a symbolic entrance gate to the city, but also as a fascinating testimony of medieval architecture.

The Bayertor belongs to the barnarkan system and can be found on the old city wall. Particularly noteworthy is the Gothic crucifixion relief, which is unique in Bavaria and shapes the history of the city. In the late Middle Ages, Landsberg grew along the salt road thanks to trade. The financing of the impressive building was supported by the citizens and the Wittelsbachers, in particular by Duke Wilhelm III. and his brother serious.

The Bayertor was extensively restored for the first time in the 1970s, at the top of this work was the committed Anton Lichtenstern. A second, extensive restoration began in 2015 and was completed in 2018. This was carried out with a lot of dedication, among other things, the figures of the crucifixion relief were restored by the sculptors Svea and Bertram Graf. This outstanding restoration even received the European Nostra medal, a real knighthood for the responsible restorers who adapted the colors with a lot of skill, so that Maria now wears a white coat. The coat of arms of the Visconti, which is visible on the gate, is reminiscent of historical connection to influences from Italy.

The Cultural Office of Landsberg also calls for a photo competition entitled "Mein Bayertor", in which submissions are welcome until July 1, 2025. This is a great opportunity for citizens to creatively express their love for the city and their landmark.

With a festival year for young and old and a colorful program, Germany's Gothic city gate is at the center of the action. The question that all arises: How many stories will the Bayertor, which stands on the border between Bavaria and Swabia, probably tell in the course of the next 600 years?
