Vintage campers awaken nostalgic dreams at meetings at Kochelsee
After a four-year break, a very special event took place at Kochelsee: The Germany-wide Camping Oldies Club met in the picturesque setting of the Renken campsite. Attendees who value simple living and community left modern technology far behind and instead immersed themselves in a cozy atmosphere filled with fairy lights and 1970s tablecloths. The anticipation for this meeting was palpable, as many members always enjoy coming together to show off their old treasures and exchange memories. Mercury reports that...
Kerstin and Ralf Möller, active members since 1996, came with their lovingly cared for Hymer B 554, named after Ralf's late father. Together they also collected signatures for the campsite operators to request a longer opening time. Ralf and Kerstin are going to Sweden next year, where an international meeting of all oldie campers awaits them. Even the younger participants, like Paula Bär and David from Nuremberg, who were there for the first time, were excited about the opportunity to spend the night in parking lots with their 1987 Hymer Ducato and share nostalgic experiences.
Retro camping and community feeling
The members of the Camping Oldies Club rely on historical charm instead of modern technology. Annemarie and Karl-Heinz Paumen, founding members of the club, have been camping since the late 1950s and bring their original Westfalia caravan from 1965 with them. After more than 55 years, the caravan is still in top shape and exudes a cozy atmosphere that is very well received by the participants. The Paumens are also passionate nature fans and enjoy spending time in the mountains or by the lake. Since the club was founded in 1988, membership has grown to 480 families, all sharing the same passion: vintage camping. Anyone who owns a vehicle that is more than 30 years old can become a member, and there are also supporting memberships for non-owners of historic vehicles, making the community even more accessible. The camping community reports that…
Nostalgia plays a special role in the camping scene, and more and more people are looking for ways to relive their childhood memories while camping. This has led to the emergence of a trend that many refer to as the “(Re)Creation Vacation.” With more than half of Millennials planning to go on nostalgia-based camping trips, campgrounds like KOA and many state parks are experiencing a surge in multi-generational bookings. Modern Nomad Gear describes how... The return to old camping traditions not only brings joy, but also relieves the burden on families' budgets when they camp with vintage equipment or their own childhood memories.
The participants of the oldies meeting were visibly happy about the reunification and the cohesion in their community. Not only were vehicles discussed, but also the attitude to life that retro camping conveys. For many, it is a retreat to escape the hustle and bustle of the modern world and focus on what really matters: spending time with friends and family.
