Price increase at MVV: Tickets will be significantly more expensive from 2026!

A new coat of paint for the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV): From January 1, 2026, things will be more expensive in the state capital. On September 19, 2025, the shareholders of MVV decided on an average price increase of 3.9 percent. These adjustments affect a variety of ticket categories differently, with some fares increasing while others remain stable or even decrease.  Mercury reports that the price increase will be particularly noticeable for monthly and weekly tickets.

There will be an average increase of 3.7 percent for single tickets, strip tickets and day tickets. For monthly tickets, passengers have to prepare for increases of 4.3 to 4.4 percent, while weekly tickets increase by a whopping 6.1 to 6.3 percent. To give a concrete example, the strip card will now cost 18.70 euros instead of 17.80 euros.

The new prices in detail

A look at the exact increases shows that the ticket for zone M (or zone 1) increases from 4.10 euros to 4.20 euros - that's an additional 10 cents. A short-distance ticket will increase from 2.00 euros to 2.10 euros, while the children's ticket will increase from 1.90 euros to 2.00 euros. A U21 strip card will in future have to cost 10.20 euros (previously 9.80 euros).

Some selected price increases are listed here:

  • Einzelfahrt Zone M: von 4,10 Euro auf 4,20 Euro
  •

  • Streifenkarte: von 17,80 Euro auf 18,70 Euro
  •

  • Monatskarte Zone M: von 68,40 Euro auf 71,40 Euro
  •

  • Wochenkarte Zone M: von 22,40 Euro auf 23,80 Euro
  •

  • Single-Tageskarte Zone M: von 9,70 Euro auf 10,10 Euro
  •

Anyone who travels by bike will also have to dig deeper into their pockets: the bike day ticket increases from 3.50 euros to 3.70 euros. Large groups also have to pay more; the group day ticket for zones M-5 increases from 30.50 euros to 32.60 euros.

Innovations and simplifications

A positive thing is the announcement that from 2026, taking children with you with the single day ticket will be free. In addition, the 365 euro ticket for students and trainees remains unchanged, which is a great relief for many families. In the future, subscriptions will only be offered on a monthly basis; the annual advance payment was canceled last year.

In addition, from January 2026, the MVV area will be expanded to include the city of Landshut and the districts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mühldorf am Inn, which will influence the entire tariff structure of the MVV. Journeys between Munich and Landshut can then be made for 23.90 euros (previously 47.40 euros on the DB), which is a real bargain.

MVV managing director Bernd Rosenbusch emphasizes that despite the price increases, MVV's extensive offering should not be neglected. These include digital passenger information displays that have already been installed and planned expansions that are intended to make using local public transport more convenient. There will also be price reductions for trips in zones 2 to 12. In the future, only one strip will be sufficient for the strip card instead of two.

Overall, the adjustments show that MVV is responding to market conditions while at the same time striving to maintain the quality of services. These various changes will be communicated in detail on the MVV website in the coming days so that passengers can start the new year well informed. In addition, the Germany ticket remains at 63 euros, but with no transfer option.

Overall, the MVV will renew and reposition itself in many ways on January 1, 2026 - we have an exciting year ahead of us!  South Germans also reported on this interesting development.
