Munich celebrates 867 years: splendor, glory and enjoyment at Marienplatz!
On Saturday, June 14, 2025, Munich celebrated its impressive 867th city birthday with a big party that was accompanied by the motto “Splendor, Glory and Enjoyment”. The sun was shining from the sky, which only increased the already happy mood. Visitors flocked to the city center to witness the celebrations. A real highlight was the large throne that was placed at Marienplatz, where people could sit down for a souvenir photo. The festive atmosphere was enriched by numerous **product queens** and princesses, including a 24-year-old wine princess from Schweinfurt, who offered visitors an insight into the diversity and quality of regional products. The Hallertau hop queen, Eva Maria Pichlmeyer, spoke about the important role of regional agriculture and brought the participants back to the essentials.
Another highlight was the craftsman's village on Odeonsplatz, where craft demonstrations were a source of amazement. A 14-year-old student showed off her talent while working with a slate hammer - quite a sight! In the Old Court there were a variety of medieval activities for the younger guests, including wood turning and preparing bread spreads. The atmosphere was made even more lively by the depictions of Empress Sisi and King Ludwig II, while Severin Müller, a healer from the past, mixed his treatment and offered healing water.
Historical experiences for young and old
But the festival not only offered entertainment for adults, but also exciting experiences for the little ones. In the Old Court there was a historical activity space for children that dealt with the effects of the Isar on life in Munich. Here children and parents were able to learn a lot about the historical way of life while cooking, washing and doing crafts. These activities were not only educational but also entertaining and allowed the young participants to express their creative abilities. There was also a multimedia exhibition “Munich Imperial Castle” in the Gothic vaulted hall, which offered numerous insights into the history of the first Wittelsbach castle.
The festival was organized by Kultur & Spielraum e.V. and the city youth welfare office, among others, who invited people to establish relationships – then as now! During the event on Sunday, which also took place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the children were able to design bracelets and pendants for their friends and try out historical techniques. The commitment of everyone involved made the city birthday party an unforgettable experience for all generations.
At Wittelsbacher Platz, the atmosphere at a dance event was kept lively even in 30 degree heat, proving that the people of Munich are proud of their history and like to celebrate it. The city birthday is not only a place for enjoyment, but also for learning together and connecting the generations.
