Munich in trade fair fever: IAA brings new features and challenges!

Munich is in the starting blocks because the IAA Mobility, one of the largest car and mobility trade fairs in the world, opens its doors tomorrow. The city is expecting numerous visitors until September 14th who can look forward to the latest innovations in the automotive industry. The construction of the trade fair has already done a great job; Gigantic installations, such as a huge Porsche logo, now adorn Wittelsbacherplatz. The city center is being converted into an exhibition center, with streets closed to make room for cranes and trucks that set up the exhibitors' impressive stands. The trade fair is planning an open space that is larger than ever this year and will be equipped with over 231 test vehicles that are ready to be tried out. “This will be the largest and most impressive open space we have ever had,” asserts Christian Vorländer, head of the Mobility division at Messe München.

Another highlight is the new Deutsche Bahn adventure world on Königsplatz, where the latest vehicles and concepts are presented. Companies like Kia and Mercedes Benz have staged large and creative exhibition stands in the city center. Accessibility is also generous, as access to the open space offerings is free and the stands are open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Focus on transport infrastructure

Parallel to the IAA there is exciting news in the area of transport infrastructure. Munich is receiving 90 new S-Bahn trains of the ET 1420 series, which will be used from 2028. These modern cars can accommodate up to 1,820 passengers, and a sample of the train can be admired at Königsplatz during the IAA. Such investments are crucial, especially in a city that is developing rapidly and needs to have a good handle on the mobility of its citizens.

However, the traffic and safety situation in Munich is not without challenges. Residents on Liebherrstrasse have lodged over 150 complaints about an accommodation facility in the last five months, putting landlords under pressure. At the same time, a serious violation in the form of a sexual assault, for which a 28-year-old is held responsible, is causing a stir. He claims to have had a relationship with the minor affected person.

Local events and developments

The security situation is currently characterized by an armed attack on Italian watch dealers after the “Munich Watch Fair”, which has caused a stir in the city. The police have now arrested a wanted violent perpetrator, which has calmed the situation among citizens. We also have to record the closure of Brasserie Thi, the reasons for which are currently unclear.

Not only is there a lot going on in the city center, there are also notable incidents in the outskirts. In Feldmoching, a motorcyclist fled from the police at a speed of 150 km/h. Such events make it clear that the claim that security in our city has improved is continually being put to the test.

With all of these developments and the upcoming trade fair hype, it is clear that Munich is not only concerned with the automotive industry, but also has numerous social and safety issues on the agenda. This means the city remains a vibrant place full of contrasts and challenges.
