Munich invests in security: New video towers against crime!
Safety is very important in Munich! Today, November 7, 2025, the police put two new mobile video towers into operation to improve the security situation in the southern Bahnhofsviertel. These towers are located at strategically important points: Schillerstrasse/Adolf-Kolping-Strasse and Adolf-Kolping-Strasse/Zweigstrasse. Their introduction complements the existing monitoring measures that are already active at the Stachus and the Old Botanical Garden. This is a further step within the framework of the Bahnhofsviertel task force, which is committed to total security.
As Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann and Police Chief Thomas Hampel explained, these video towers are equipped with the latest technology. These include a remote direction and zoom function as well as a 360° panoramic view camera. Can be used flexibly, e.g. B. at events or in busy places, they can be extended up to six meters high. This also makes monitoring open areas much easier, while the special integrated alarm trigger protects against unauthorized access.
Technology and security strategy
Video surveillance plays a central role in the Bavarian security strategy, as stmi.bayern.de emphasizes. Surveillance technology is now embedded in many areas of our lives - from train stations to airports to shopping centers. The goal is clear: improve security or at least increase the population's feeling of security. The effectiveness of such measures is discussed in many studies, which have shown that the reduction in crime is particularly noticeable in parking lots.
In Munich, one of the safest cities in Germany with over 200,000 inhabitants, the new video towers are part of a broader initiative. For example, the Bavarian state government has allocated 3.8 million euros in the 2025 supplementary budget to expand police video surveillance in order to modernize existing systems and procure new cameras.
Current challenges and incidents
But despite increased security measures, there are challenges. On November 3, 2025, a makeshift homeless shelter near Lerchenauer Strasse was set on fire. Tragically, a 32-year-old homeless Polish woman has been found dead and there is evidence of a violent crime. A 28-year-old Swedish woman was arrested as a suspect.
Also on October 31, a 24-year-old was arrested during a traffic stop after drug tests returned a positive result for cocaine. During a search of his apartment, a large amount of narcotics was found, which led to an arrest warrant being applied for.
On November 6th there was a confrontation between young people in Ottobrunn in which one young person was seriously injured. There was also a case of call center fraud in which a woman over 80 handed over money to a supposed hospital employee.
Burglaries and robberies also keep the police busy. On the same day, a break-in occurred in a single-family home and a 22-year-old was attacked in Munich. Three suspects, one of whom received an arrest warrant, were arrested.
Strengthen feeling of security
These incidents once again underline the need for increased police presence and such surveillance measures. The new video towers are not only a technical update, but are also intended to strengthen citizens' general sense of security and promote crime prevention. The police will also have a regular presence in these neighborhoods to further build trust in the security architecture.
Today's developments are another sign that safety is a high priority in Bavaria. Investing in modern surveillance technologies is a clear commitment to preserving the quality of life of citizens and resolutely countering criminal tendencies.
