Olympics 2036 in Munich? Germans are clearly in favor of it!

Enthusiasm for the Olympic Games in Germany is high. According to a recent survey by star Three quarters of Germans want the Olympic Games to return. Munich in particular has emerged as the favorite. Over 66 percent of Munich residents voted in a referendum on October 26th to run for the Summer Games from 2036 to 2044.

But support for the games is not only strong in Munich. A Forsa survey shows that a total of 72 percent of Germans support the idea, while only 22 percent are against it. This approval extends across all age groups and political camps, even among the Left and the AfD, 71 percent share the enthusiasm. The survey made it clear that 39 percent of supporters preferred Munich as a venue, followed by the Rhine/Ruhr region with 24 percent.

The costs at a glance

An important aspect when applying is the costs, which according to information from olympiabewerbung-muenchen.com were significantly reduced. While previous application processes cost between 30 and 40 million euros, the current costs are now between 5 and 8 million euros. So far, Munich has invested around 1 million euros in the application, while the total costs, including a referendum of 6.7 million euros, are around 8 million euros.

In addition, there are considerations about financing the subsequent costs for the preparation and implementation of the games. The distinction between event costs and infrastructure costs plays a central role here. For example, the majority of event costs at the 2024 Paris Games will be borne by the private sector, while Madrid spent up to $20 billion on the 2020 Games. The positive long-term perspective of infrastructure investments triggered by the Olympics could be of great benefit to urban development.

Outlook on the decision

The German Olympic Sports Confederation has announced that it will decide on the application in autumn 2024. It remains exciting to see what role the various potential venues – Munich, Berlin, Hamburg and the Rhine/Ruhr region – will play. The support for Munich is particularly notable in the center of Germany and in the south. In North Rhine-Westphalia, the Rhine/Ruhr region enjoys the greatest approval.

We can't wait to see whether Munich gets the contract and whether Germany can shine in Olympic glory again. In any case, the anticipation of a possible Olympics is palpable, and many are already predicting the unforgettable atmosphere of the games.
