Subway chaos in Munich: Tragic emergency medical intervention at Goetheplatz!
A tragic incident occurred at the Goetheplatz subway station in Munich, which not only cost the life of one person, but also had a noticeable impact on public transport. The alarm came in at 5:50 p.m. after a person fell under a subway train and unfortunately died. The police confirmed on Thursday afternoon that it was a suicide. A complete rescue train was deployed, including several fire engines. Numerous rescue services and police were also on site to deal with the situation. A crisis intervention team was also called in to support possible witnesses and relatives.
The U3 and U6 subway lines were severely affected during the emergency operation. The U3 ran between Fürstenried West and Poccistraße and between Sendlinger Tor and Moosach Bahnhof, but the Goetheplatz stop was not served at all. This was similar with the U6: The trains only ran between Klinikum Großhadern and Implerstrasse and between Sendlinger Tor and Garching Research Center. The Poccistraße and Goetheplatz stops were also canceled. In order not to leave passengers out in the cold, the Münchner Verkehrsgesellschaft (MVG) set up a replacement bus service between Poccistraße and Sendlinger Tor.
Traffic restrictions during rush hour
The situation was made even more explosive by the evening rush hour and a Champions League game between FC Bayern and Club Brugge at 9 p.m. Many passengers had to prepare for delays and later for the restrictions to end at 7:40 p.m. Overall, the period in which the U3 and U6 were not serving between Poccistraße and Sendlinger Tor was a challenge not only for commuters, but also for the fans who flocked to the game. The MVG had originally only announced the restrictions until 7:20 p.m., but there were delays and isolated cancellations until around 8:40 p.m.
Security underground
The subway incidents also serve as a reminder of the important role of subway guards in ensuring underground safety. Up to 15 double patrols patrol the tunnels at the same time to provide insight and support. The operations managers coordinate the operations in order to be able to respond appropriately to any dangerous injuries. In the past, the catacombs were often a refuge for drug addicts, but the situation has now eased as the entrances are largely closed and secured with alarms. Nevertheless, there are always encounters that show that social problems do not simply disappear.
Overall, the tragic incident at Goetheplatz not only touched human lives, but also made it clear once again how important security forces are in local public transport - especially in times of high passenger numbers.
For everyone who relies on the subway for this reason, it is important to pay close attention to loudspeaker announcements and train destination displays in the future. The situation remains tense, but those responsible are working to ensure the safety of all passengers.
