Donaustadion: Huge renovation for Ulm's football temple decided!
A lot is happening in the Ulm Danube Stadium: The stadium, which is currently used by SSV Ulm 1846 Fußball as its main user, is undergoing extensive renovation, which will cost an estimated 36.5 million euros. The renovation work was unanimously approved at a meeting of the main education and sports committee. The Danube Stadium was originally intended to serve as a multifunctional facility, but after months of negotiations between the city of Ulm and the clubs, this plan was put on hold. Instead, the focus remains on the renovation of the stadium for athletics events and the needs of football ([Augsburger Allgemeine](https://www.augsburger- Allgemeine.de/neu-ulm/ulm-so-wird-das-donaustadion-ummachen-112668434), Schwäbische).
The ambitious project involves increasing the audience capacity from the current 4,600 seats to 11,000. After the renovation, the stadium will be able to accommodate 17,400 visitors, which will be a real benefit for the region. The city administration is aiming for construction to begin in the first quarter of 2027, ideally during the summer break. However, unknown water and electricity lines could affect the schedule. In order to bridge the construction phase, discussions should take place about alternative options for SSV Ulm.
Funding and support
A central point in the renovation is the financing options. The state of Baden-Württemberg has already pledged 4.6 million euros in funding. The city of Ulm plans to finance the remaining 31.9 million euros through loans. This means that the municipality will pay in advance, while the repayment by SSV Ulm will be strongly tied to the sporting success of the football club ([Augsburger Allgemeine](https://www.augsburger- Allgemeine.de/neu-ulm/ulm-so-wird-das-donaustadion-umbau-112668434), Schwäbische).
A discussion about proposed naming rights for the stands has also broken out. Possible sales of these rights could even lead to the Donaustadion being renamed. This could be a good source of income to cover the financial burden.
Demolition and new construction
Another important section of the project is the planned demolition and new construction of the north stand, including the I and H blocks as well as the guest area, which is scheduled to start in 2027. The back straight, however, remains unchanged. Toilets and dining facilities will be located under the new stands, which will significantly improve the overall ambience of the stadium.
The final opening of the Jahnhalle, which belongs to the SSV Ulm, is also coming up: a farewell party for members of the club will be celebrated here on November 8th. Auctions of pieces of parquet flooring are also planned in order to perhaps generate a few euros for the renovation.
Overall, the city of Ulm is facing exciting times. Citizens can hope for a modernized stadium that will provide a new home not only for football, but also for athletics. The city administration shows a good hand by seeking dialogue with the clubs and approaching pragmatic solutions. We look forward to further development!
