Thunderstorms and heat: Germany's wild weather change on Monday!
A change in the weather is coming in Cologne and the rest of Germany, which has a few surprises in store. Last Sunday, Saarbrücken-Burbach experienced the highest temperature of the year at 36.2 degrees. But that's over for now: The German Weather Service is already warning of strong thunderstorms, heavy rain and squalls for the start of the week, especially in the north and south of the country. An abrupt change in the weather is to be expected on Monday, which has already led to a forced break for many music enthusiasts during the ongoing Hurricane Festival in Lower Saxony.
Current weather forecasts show that temperatures will drop sharply in some cases, while up to 30 degrees can be expected in southeast Germany. However, thunderstorm forecasts remain inaccurate and can only be precisely located 1-2 hours in advance. This means that Cologne residents in particular should be very careful on Monday in order to stay safe from sudden changes in the weather.
From heavy rain to thunderstorms – what awaits us
Further showers and thunderstorms are already expected in the northwest, while temperatures there could be between 20 and 26 degrees. It will be a little cooler on the North Sea, while the region around the southeast has to contend with thunderstorms and temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees, which can also be accompanied by hail and heavy rain. The thunderstorms will have largely subsided for Tuesday night, but it will remain humid between 20 and 24 degrees, especially in northern and central areas. Stormy conditions are also expected on the North and Baltic Seas, while the south will be spared from the storms with dry phases and temperatures of 25 to 31 degrees.
It is important to note that UV radiation exposure is also high to very high during this hot phase. The UV index shows that the risk of sunburn increases as temperatures rise. Current forecasts from the German Weather Service (DWD) for the UV index are also available for the coming days and are based on detailed modeling derived from global weather forecast systems. The UV Index measures the intensity of UV radiation on a scale of 0 to 11+, where higher values mean a higher risk of skin damage.
Sun protection is important!
To ensure that staying outdoors in summer does not pose a health risk, appropriate sun protection measures are essential. With a UV index of 6-7, which is expected for many regions, sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 should be applied, especially on pale skin. It is advisable to avoid the midday sun and regularly rub sunscreen on yourself to prevent skin damage. Drink enough water and seek shade on midsummer days.
The DWD has provided a variety of helpful information to evaluate the sunburn-effective UV dose. Data about the UV index and skin care recommendations based on it are very valuable. It's worth taking a look at the current values before going on a trip or going outdoors - regardless of whether you're heading outside for a barbecue or a walk in the park.
So stay well prepared and protect yourself from the unpredictable weather changes and strong UV radiation!
