Katrin Albsteiger wants to become mayor of Neu-Ulm again!
Katrin Albsteiger, the incumbent mayor of Neu-Ulm, has announced her renewed candidacy for the local elections on March 8, 2026. The 42-year-old, who won the first round of voting in 2020 with 52.3 percent of the vote, wants to use the coming years to further develop the city. She describes the position as her “dream job” and consciously gave herself time to make her decision. “There was never any question of making another choice,” she underlines her determination, where she has been active since she took office after the Gerold Noerenberg era. Your official nomination by the CSU city association is scheduled for October 16, 2025, followed by the city council list's recommendation decision on October 31, 2025, as Ulm-News reports.
As a mother of two daughters, Albsteiger lives in Burlafingen and has established herself as a well-connected police officer within the CSU. Her successes in her term of office so far include numerous new daycare centers and schools as well as renovations of central traffic axes. These measures are part of their vision for a sustainable city that must also overcome challenges such as improving infrastructure and city finances. Neu-Ulm currently has 63,641 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2024), and with the election of Eva Treu as district administrator in 2024, there are now two women (both CSU) at the head of the city and district, which has a lasting impact on the political landscape.
Local elections in Germany and the role of citizens
The local elections in Germany are not only important for the election of mayors, they also include the election of municipal and city councils as well as district councils. The Basic Law regulates the principles of electoral law that apply to all local elections. Union citizens who live in Germany are eligible to vote and vote in these elections, which promotes democratic participation. However, the proportion of people who take part in local elections is often lower on average than in national elections. This could pose a challenge for the candidates who, like Albsteiger, will have to rely on citizens' votes in the upcoming elections in order to successfully continue their projects, as the Federal Agency for Civic Education explains.
In the 2026 election, the focus will certainly also be on Albsteiger's plans for the development of the city. She repeatedly emphasizes that urban development is a long-term process and that a lot still needs to be done in the coming term. With reference to her vision for the city and the clear focus on sustainable and citizen-oriented urban development, she could convince voters to continue to support her policies.
On March 8, 2026, the people of New Ulm will have the opportunity to use their vote to decide on the future of the city and to enable Katrin Albsteiger to serve another term of office. It remains to be hoped that citizens will perceive the election as an important part of their participation and actively help shape the political discourse.
