Mass brawl in Berlin: football dispute among children escalates!
A tough dispute over a football ended in massive chaos in Berlin on June 18, 2025. A mass brawl broke out at a playground in the Reinickendorf district, involving almost 100 people. It all started with a serious conflict between three children, two of them aged 11 and 12, who were provoked while playing football by another 12-year-old who had taken the ball away from them. According to SWP, the situation escalated when family members, including mothers and sisters, entered and further inflamed the situation by adding violence.
Witnesses report that not only were there beatings, but some of those involved also threw stones. The police ultimately had to arrive with a large contingent of 16 emergency vehicles to bring the incident under control. A particularly concerning incident occurred when a 46-year-old punched a 17-year-old in the face and pulled out a knife. Thanks to the officers' quick intervention, he was arrested.
Injuries and the aftermath
Fortunately, there were no life-threatening injuries among the children, but the two playing children complained of pain and refused medical treatment. A boy had to be taken to hospital because of a head laceration and shortness of breath. Fortunately, the situation calmed down quite quickly after the police intervened, but the event raises questions about the development of violence in children and adolescents.
Youth violence is a topic that is repeatedly discussed publicly. According to a study by the German Youth Institute, police crime statistics (PKS) are an important indicator that youth delinquency and violence have increased. In 2023, over 717,000 young people were suspected of a crime, representing an increase compared to the previous year. In addition, registered cases of simple assault and violent crime are constantly increasing.
Causes and prevention strategies
The increase in violence among young people is explained, among other things, by the psychological stress that many children and young people have experienced as a result of the corona pandemic. In addition, research has shown that young males in particular often appear in statistics as victims of violent crimes. In view of this development, experts are calling for prevention strategies to be continued and expanded in schools, child and youth welfare services and the police.
It remains to be hoped that incidents like this will not become the norm and that society will find ways to identify and curb violence in children and young people at an early stage. The dramatic events in Berlin are a clear wake-up call for everyone involved to pay more attention to prevention and support for young people.
