a worrying trend
The incident once again throws a light on the topic of youth crime in Germany, which, according to Statista, reached a maximum last year. In 2024, around 13,800 cases were registered, which is more than twice as many as in 2016. The Federal Criminal Police Office emphasizes, among other things, the psychological stress by the Corona measures that affect many young people.
It should be noted that violence among young people and young adults, also in the age group from 14 to 20 years, increases. The proportion of men among the suspects remains disproportionately high. It is alarming that almost three quarters of the young suspects were male. In this context, the question arises as to whether harder sanctions in youth criminal law or the reduction of punishment are sensible as a deterrent measures.
