Nabada in Ulm: Thousands celebrate in bright sunshine!

What a spectacle! Today, July 21, 2025, the city of Ulm celebrates its traditional Swearing Monday with the magnificent Nabada on the Danube. It is already clear: thousands of people have gathered to glide through the shimmering waters of the river in their best spirits, while tens of thousands of spectators watch the action on the banks. The sun is shining and contributes to an exuberant atmosphere that combines well-known traditions and a festive mood. Ulm and the neighboring city of Neu-Ulm show their best side and set an example for community and customs.

As always, the festive dance begins with the traditional swearing-in speech by the mayor of Ulm, which will be held at 11 a.m. from the balcony of the swearing house. As part of his speech, the mayor swears an oath to the city constitution in accordance with the “Great Letter of Oath” from 1397 and affirms that he will “be a common man to both rich and poor.” This commitment forms the celebratory start before the Nabada starts at 4 p.m. and the participants paddle towards Friedrichsau in uniquely decorated boats, rafts and rubber boats. If the weather doesn't work out, red baskets can be hung on the cathedral as a sign of a possible cancellation on the day of the event.

A feast for all senses

The event leaves nothing to be desired and offers a colorful mix of tradition and modern celebration. The new party zones in the Fischerviertel promise social gatherings and fun times in numerous restaurants. There are no entry controls here, so visitors can plunge into the hustle and bustle of the celebrations without any hurdles. The DJ does not provide a large show stage, but has made himself comfortable among the guests in one of the guest houses to play DJ sets that match the exuberant atmosphere.

The parties in Pfauengasse stay active until 11:30 p.m. and ensure that visitors can party long after the Nabada. The light serenade, which will serve as an atmospheric prelude to the oath weekend from July 18th to 20th with tea lights on the Danube, is already attracting many visitors. And the fishing jousting competitions, which take place from July 18th to 20th, are always another highlight on the holiday plans. There's something going on here every day - from pageants to exciting fishing competitions that combine the seriousness of the competition with fun and entertainment.

Tradition meets modern customs

A commonly seen theme in the boat designs is the reference to former US President Donald Trump, which stimulates participants' creativity and provides humorous moments. Especially in Bavarian cities, the local reference with political allusions and current events is often used to make the audience smile. This type of political observation shows that Swearing Monday is not just a custom, but also offers an opportunity for reflection and fun.

The event highlights how important coming together is for the people of Ulm and Neu-Ulm. Whether celebrating together in the water or on land, the entire community takes part and celebrates on a day that is one of the highlights of the year. Ulm’s Nabada will certainly go down in history again this year – as a day full of joy and community. Finally, all that remains to be said is: On to the next Swearing Monday, when it will be said again: “Nabada, the festival on the water!”
