Cyclists injured: Drivers overlooked cyclists at the Neu-Ulm town hall!

On Sunday evening, an accident occurred in Neu-Ulm at the intersection in front of the town hall in which a 28-year-old cyclist was slightly injured. The young man was on Augsburger Strasse when he was overlooked by a 20-year-old driver who wanted to turn left into Ludwigstrasse. Although the cyclist was still trying to avoid, he could not prevent a fall and injured himself minimally. The accident occurred when the driver simply overlooked the cyclist authorized to go. "We take it very seriously," says a spokesman for the Neu-Ulm police inspection, which has now started to investigate negligent bodily harm in road traffic. The property damage on the bike amounts to around 3,000 euros, since the carbon frame was damaged, while the car costs around 2,000 euros - the right rear door got scratches. Augsburger Allgemeine reports that the cyclist refused and did not occur any further injuries.

But this incident is not the only one in Neu-Ulm who has recently made headlines. On May 15, 2024, there was also a dangerous collision between a cyclist and a driver. The 19-year-old cyclist was hit by a driver at the confluence in the strong field/Pfaffenweg who wanted to turn right, but disregarded the cyclist's right of way. The collision led to a fall, in which the young man probably got an elbow fracture. He had to be taken to the hospital while the polluter removed from the scene of the accident without taking care of the injured. The police are looking for the driver, since a dash cam on the bike recorded the incident, including the license plate of the fleeting car. The property damage to the bike was estimated at around 200 euros. As reported by the SWP, investigations were also made for negligent bodily harm.

increasing number of accidents and risks for cyclists

The incidents illustrate a worrying trend that shows itself in road traffic. According to a current statistics from the Federal Statistical Office, 441 cyclists died in road traffic in 2024 - a disturbing increase compared to previous years, although this number was less than in 2023. If you take a closer look at the statistics, you can see that every sixth traffic fatalities were cyclists in the past year, and proud 70.7 percent of the 92,882 accidents with personal injuries in which cyclists were involved in collisions with cars. In 75.3 percent of the cases, drivers have the main debt on these accidents. It is particularly alarming that 43.5 percent of the fatally crashed cyclists were traveling with e-bikes-a value that has risen sharply in recent years. Tagesschau emphasizes that seniors from the age of 65 are particularly at risk in this context: Over two thirds of the deadly injured cyclists belonged to this age group.

The combination of inattentive drivers and the increase in cyclists on the streets leads to a steady risk for all road users. It remains to be seen which measures are taken to increase security for cyclists and to avoid such incidents in the future.
