Climate-friendly gardens: How plants can survive heat and storms!

The challenges of climate change do not stop at our gardens. Higher temperatures and changeable weather conditions make many hobby gardeners think. How do we best deal with heat, drought and heavy rain? This is exactly where the advice from experts like Katrin Pilz, head of the district advisory service for horticulture and landscape conservation at the Neuburg district office, comes in. It offers valuable tips for adapting our gardens to the new climatic conditions.

With climate change, we are not only experiencing longer warm periods, but also more frequent periods of water shortage and sudden heavy rain. The groundwater reserves are no longer sufficiently filled, which puts strain on the plants (ninety percent of garden irrigation takes place in the summer months). In addition, soil compaction and the establishment of gravel gardens lead to dangerous heat islands in our gardens ( Augsburger Allgemeine ). These conditions require a rethinking process among hobby gardeners, because only with the right measures will the garden remain lively and productive in the future.

Adaptation to climate change

The first step to adaptation is careful selection of plants. There are many heat-resistant and drought-tolerant plants today that are not only visually appealing but also require little care. For example, lavender, thyme and sedum are excellent options that require little water ( Home garden & living ). In addition, robust trees such as the field maple or the chestnut can thrive without great demands and even provide edible fruit.

Effective water management is essential. In particular, collecting rainwater through rain barrels or cisterns should be considered. Such systems make it possible to save a little water even during dry periods. In addition, mulching is a proven means of retaining moisture in the soil and ensuring the supply of nutrients to our plants ( NDR ).

Tips for garden care

To prepare your garden for extreme weather conditions, we recommend following four simple rules. This includes, among other things, watering directly to the roots of the plants and not too frequently, but generously. Watering in the morning and collecting rainwater are also essential tips to provide the plants with enough water in summer. The soil should also be loosened regularly, especially after heavy rain, so that it remains well ventilated ( Augsburger Allgemeine ).

For responsible garden design, it is advisable to use peat-free soil and create gardens close to nature. Wildflower meadows and hedges promote biodiversity and make the garden less susceptible to pests and diseases. The selection of mixed cultures can also increase the robustness of the plants and make an important contribution to the stability of the garden ( Home garden & living ).

Considering the large garden areas in Germany, many of which still have potential for improvement, it is clear: now is the ideal time to make your own garden climate-friendly. No matter whether you want to take care of flower meadows, resistant trees or innovative irrigation systems - there are many ways to make your own garden a retreat for people and animals. Maybe you too will soon have a garden in harmony with nature.
