High risk of forest fires in Neumarkt, Upper Palatinate: observation flights from June 21st to 23rd for prevention due to dry conditions.

Danger of forest fires in Neumarkt: Helicopters will be flying from Saturday!
The exceptionally high temperatures and the persistent drought in the Upper Palatinate are currently causing an alarming situation. How nn.de reports, both farmers and forest owners in the region are in the starting blocks and are eagerly waiting for rain. Due to the high fire risk, the Upper Palatinate government has already initiated measures to avert a potential disaster.
A recent press release announced the implementation of forest fire aerial observations, which will be carried out in close coordination with the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry (AELF). From Saturday, June 21st to Monday, June 23rd, helicopter flights will take place over the administrative district in order to identify suspicious areas early and to intervene quickly if necessary. The flight times for the Neumarkt district are as follows:
- Samstag, 21. Juni: 13:00 – 14:00 Uhr und 18:00 – 19:00 Uhr.
- Sonntag, 22. Juni: 18:00 – 19:00 Uhr.
- Montag, 23. Juni: 18:00 – 19:00 Uhr.
Forest fire danger index and current values
In the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, for example, the index values are between 3 and 5, while similar risks also exist in Bavaria. It is obvious that the persistent heat and the associated drought represent a major challenge not only for nature but also for agricultural businesses.
The climate scenario and its consequences
Another issue that should not go unnoticed is climate change and its role in causing forest fires. How quarks.de shows, the challenges in forest management are complex. Johann Goldammer emphasizes that while reduced farming can promote biodiversity and carbon sequestration, it also creates more dead wood, which is potential fuel. Although dead wood stores water and carbon, it can also significantly promote fires.
In order to counteract the risk of forest fires, the Federal Environment Agency recommends converting conifer monocultures into multi-layered mixed forests, as hardwoods generally burn more slowly, provided their crowns are dense. In order to actively reduce the risk of forest fires, there is also the “Brennpunkt Wald” educational campaign, which conveys simple but effective rules for forest fire prevention.
Given these circumstances, it is crucial that each individual becomes aware of the risk of wildfires and takes responsibility. Only together can we protect our forests and contribute to the preservation of these valuable ecosystems.
